Door lock actuators vs springs? Where to buy?

I'm being told (by an independent LR shop) that I need new door lock actuators on my 99 Disco II...would hope this is only a spring issue but I cannot tell? I don't think they spent 10 minutes looking at the doors however and at $500 to repair 2 doors they're crazy as hell---I did the window motor on 2 doors myself- I hope it isn't too bad doing the locks???

My driver door only opens w/ the key itself. The remote/key fob doesn't do it...although the remote will lock ALL the doors just fine-it just won't unlock.

The rear hatch door is the exact same. It can only be unlocked from pulling the inside handle (no key access on the outside). The remote/key fob will lock it (and all the doors) just fine (it does automatically at 8mph also). I'm sick of stretching across the back seats to unlock the dang hatch door from the inside! Once unlocked though I can open and close it all day long...what do y'all think?

Anybody know where I can get cheap new/used door lock actuators? Installation for a DII? I see DI install but it doesn't look like my door panel access very much? Please reply to hughes2925@hotmail.com

Thanks, Nate

I had my '02 in the shop a few months ago for the same reason (still covered under warranty :D ). I can tell you that they replaced the whole mechanism, latch and all. They told me it is all one piece and must be ordered as a unit. Take this for what its worth...it was a stealership telling me this, but I did get a whole new latch and lock mechanism.

Hope this helps.

My door is actually apart in my garage with the same problem. I will tell you- it's a pain in the ass to replace it because the window frame blocks it and you have to dismantle the door and remove the frame. I was able to get a lock actuator from a salvage yard for $25 though so that saved me a few bucks. All the door locking and opening functions go through that one big unit so you have to replace the whole thing if something stops working.

I got 5 of the springs from England. If you want to take it on I might have an extra one. I have a copy of the instructions as well.

D2 and D1 have nothing in common. D2 is a complete assembly. glued together. The shop told you what it costs, and they're "crazy as Hell?" Perhaps they should have charged you more for diagnosis to come up with the same conclusion; would you feel better? It ain't a Tempo. Consumer Reports doesn't hate these trucks because of their awsome reliability and inexpensive repairs.
Junkyards will have lock actuators, but they won't be too cheap, it's a lot of work to get them out. Besides, you already have used ones.

I just did my tail door actuator on my '02 D2... part was $145 from Atlantic british...

As stated the D2 is one complete assembly for the latch and lock actuator... looks complicated as hell, but the tail door actuator R&R was pretty easy... about 30 minutes total.

While JP Frick is obviously a genious who works for a stealership (or worse a LR tech at a stealership), still no one has given me an answer on the spring issue. Are any of these problems coming from springs or is it the actuators?

Didn't this give you a clue?

"D2 is a complete assembly. glued together."
