I thought it would be a no brainer to replace my upstream drivers side O2 sensor. Well, after some struggle, I got the O2 sensor out, but can't get the "new" one in. The threads will not catch, and it's tight quarters in there.

I noticed that the threads on the one I took out were rounded off a bit, so that could be a problem.

I decided to just take it to my local mechanic 4 miles away, but there is no O2 sensor in it. Can I drive it to him, or do I have to get it flat bedded there?

Thanks.

fyi....the thread size for the O2 sensor is 12mm x1.25.......you could try threading a tap into the damaged hole to repair the threads

Best bet is to use a thread chaser. It is meant for this type of recovery/repair. A standard tap can be difficult to get straight into messed up threads, and has a good chance of creating its own path. You can get a chaser relatively cheaply. Since the D1's use the smaller M12 size, it will cost a bit more... the larger M14/M18 sizes are common spark plug sizes.

Here's an example of a set:
