I dropped the oil pan last night to put a new gasket in. 1995 Classic.

The workshop manual doesn't say anything about removing any other components to actually physically remove it. I searched the board without success.

Do I have to drop the rear sway bar to get it out or try to do the gasket in 3" of clearance?

Is their a Houdini way to get it out?

Thanks

How did the REAR swaybar get in the way of the oilpan?

No gasket was used on the classic. Make your own with a product that meets specs. Try jacking the body up a bit to extend the suspension. I don't recall having to disassemble any of the susp to remove the oil pan. It is a good idea to fully remove the pan, clean it well to remove sludge and other contaminents. It it also important to fully clean the mating surfaces of all oil, dirt, old gakets prior to reassembly.

I would put it up on jack stands to give you some working room under it. Drop the front swaybar where it attaches to the frame. Drop the oil pan and pull it out. Clean it. Apply "the right stuff" gasket maker, then install. Use some bolts (don't remember what size) with the heads cut off to line up the pan. Reinstall.

It's actually a fairly easy job.

I have to jack my P38 up a bit to clear the pan, and I don't have a gasket either. I've used Hylomar before, and most recently RTV sealant, and have been leak free for some time.

Also make sure you tighten the bolts in the correct order and to the correct specs. That should be in the RAVE cd as well.

Thanks for the advice.

Dropping the FRONT swaybar which is located behind the Front axle did the trick.

Why would Rover Connection sell me an oil pan gasket? It lined up perfectly.

On your advice and since the pan did not have a gasket, I used RTV. Hope I used enough.

While you have the oil pan off check out the oil pickup tube and make sure it's tight. On both my 97 LR's when I dropped the oil pans the pickup tubes were loose which could lead to a blown engine if not taken care off ASAP.
