Why refuse a check point if you're sober? Just to prove a point? don't people realize why we do them? Its not like there's a guy standing behind putting a dollar in my pocket everytime a car comes through. Everyone I work with has a genuine desire to keep drunks off the road.

Any good LEO can "see" everything they need without someone answering any questions.

I think there is a growing number of people who have witnessed and grow tired of people abusing power and are starting to revolt against police, gov't etc, whether the stop is for the good of the whole or not. I for one think it is good that people know and put their rights to use. I know it doesn't make your job any easier, but that's the way it's going.

Seriously. This guy is a freaking dick. I hate when people pull crap like this. A DUI checkpoint is to keep drunk drivers off of the roads. When people drive drunk people die. What is this country coming to?!?!?

I rarely get pissed because someone has exercised their constitutional rights.

A DUI checkpoint is to keep drunk drivers off of the roads.

It actually takes officers off of the road for several hours that could be patrolling and finding the drunks and instead has them babysitting soccer moms and mostly non-drunks just trying to get home. Stopping a thousand people just in case is bullshit. Any trained policeman can see the difference.

We don't stand out in 10 degree winter nights so the state can make money. Every check point I can think of has been volunteer. Check points really aren't that effective, they are more of a highly visable deterrent.

I can agree with this. That is also why I have a problem with it. The highly visable deterrent doesn't deter but rather detours.

I call bullshit. In Northampton Co. PA officers get paid $25 per hr min 5hrs for a DUI checkpoint. If you get a DUI in PA and you are a first time offender you can apply for ARD and pay a fee of $1500 to lose your license for 30 days and then have your DUI expunged.Unless you tell the judge he's a goatfucking fruitcake you will get ARD.So at $1500 a pop how is this not a money maker? I don't know how it works in VA but in PA DUI's are a cash cow and they milk that bitch for all its worth. As far as the DUI thing goes I don't d&d so it does'nt affect me but the as the checkpoint thing goes why not just sit outside the bar and skip the checkpoint.

Every enforcement action with the exception of a verbal warning costs the offender money. That's part of the punishment. Maybe we could change that and make the money payable to march of dimes, but then again how will my salary get paid? You have to remember that the penalties from breaking the law goes right back to paying the salaries of those in the system and I bet those moneys don't cover everything. And I make $22 an hour to work a checkpoint and I volunteer for them every chance I get. As I said I before I have a genuine desire to prevent dui. I do a good job of it without the check points.

You just said a lot of things that make me wonder how much liberty the people in your jurisdiction really enjoy.

Hey, take it easy on him, he does a good job. He probably doesn't waste anyone's time and he probably catches every drunk he sees.

We have border control checkpoints, department of agriculture checkpoints, toll booths, patrol cars, motorcycles, radar, laser speed monitoring, facial recognition software, security cameras, red light cameras, speed cameras, license plate readers, helicopters, and now drones. ...and you guys are complaining about DUI checkpoints? For fuck's sake, talk about mixed up priorities...

I will get corrected if I am wrong.......

DUI checkpoints are illegal. There is no probable cause to pull random vehicles over on a highway/road.
