Yesterday was fun....... Not!

I Replaced the T-stat, upper radiator hose and expansion tank.

All was going swimmingly until I tried to bleed the air out, and the dumb bleed valve took a sh&!. I was only planning on doing the expansion tank, and T-stat, until that valve broke apart in the hose.

So what is up with that crappy valve anyway? I see that the new hose has the valve on the plastic 3 way connection, and not on the top hose.

Whatever you do, don't use anything more than your fingers to tighten that screw.

As an emergency fix, you can use a 6 m/m bolt, flat washer and O-ring. Thread the nut on the bolt, add the washer. Put the O-ring up against the washer, thread the bolt into the hose. Gently tighten the nut against the washer/o-ring, voila!

PT. Your nominated as least likely to end up stranded in a remote area and possible vulcher food.
I, on the other hand, have to stop and think about how to solve my issue. I had a coolant hose going to the t-housing split at the end on a long trip. I had to sit and think about it before I realized it was a simple fix. There was enough hose that I could cut 2 inches off and fit it back. Duh!

Thank you. Necessity truly is the mother of invention and I sometimes have WAY too much time on my ADD hands.

I used to work with a lady environmental engineer-she worked at a coal power plant. Her husband was a PhD mechanical engineering professor. They were driving down the road one day when a radiator hos blew. He got out of the car, lifted the hood, looked at the engine, got back in the car and told her he'd call AAA...

She got out, grabbed a coat hanger off the side of the road and a roll of duct tape out of the back of the car along with a pair of pliers...

She wrapped the hose with duct tape, wrapped that with the coat hanger, put duct tape over all of that and filed the rad with bottled water...

They drove to their destination, had a great time. On the way home, they stopped at a parts store, bought a hose, she put it on in the parking lot and away they went.

Yes, I was impressed when it was related to me!

Sometimes we need to be a little more creative and less frightened about what might happen to an "exotic" vehicle for which parts are hard to come by and expensive!
If it's already broken, how can we at least get home?

I only used my fingers. The little plastic sleeve inside the hose fell out inside. If I had started it, that little plastic threaded sleeve would have been on it's way through my cooling system.

I know I could have disconnected the hose and let it drain out but, I was not in an emergency situation.

Oh memories. That happened to me the first day I bought my D2. Paid the owner drove home to find all the coolent on the ground.

The new hose that replaces that hose has a better bleeder that won't break. Time to update the upper hose $80

And it costs almost $100!

Whatever one does, do not use anything more robust than a coin to tighten the screw!

It amazes me that the same folks who built my series trucks built the DII.

$66 list Genuine want a few PT

The hose cost me 66 bucks at Columbia Rovers.

So far this month I have replaced the upper hoses, Lower hose set to expansion, T-stat, and expansion tank. For a grand total of $240..

But it is a nine year old Rover. So it's to be expected.

My wife thinks I should sell it, my response, NEVER!!!!!! HAHAHAHA!

i cheat and fill it from the upper rad hose... warm it up, then run it at 3k rpms until it sucks down the bottle (ie t-stat opens), then while holding it at 3k, open it and top it off, then close it and go for a drive. has worked for me hundreds of times... but Im sure there are many methods out there.

I should have read better. I asumed it was your old hose. Next time use a little restraint. That being said take it back to Columbia I know that any new part has a 12 month warranty.

Sorry, I was beat when I wrote this. It was the old hose. I was trying to burb after installing the T-stat when I broke the old hose valve, So I had to buy a new one from CR.

It was a real pain in the butt trying to burb it. All the hoses are nice and tight now and the expansion tank is holding level. It never once over heated. I followed the RAV instruction.

And I just looked and saw where A/B only wants $59.95 for them. I stand corrected, it wasn't that long ago, they were more.

Land Rover and their damned shifting prices and part numbers!

Doug will take good care of all of his clients, he's a good guy (well, both of the Doug's in PDX working on Rovers are good guys!).
