Hello Everyone.

So I spent the last day and a half reassembling my engine after doing the head gasket. Everything went pretty well going back on except realizing that the wiring for the driver side injectors and such was on the wrong side the the PAS pump.

So we filled her up with fluids, turned the key, and everything went crazy, hazards flashing with the switch off, radio didn't work, doors locked & unlocked, etc. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it and everything fixed itself. After a few tries of starting it finally got going. The idle was off but eventually fixed itself.

My issue now is that when I press on the gas, the engine races up to about 1500rpm and stays there. If I restart the engine the idle goes back to a normal range but still jumps around a little. The wires are on the throttle correctly...

Can anyone help?

BTW the CEL codes are P1590 and P0505, both relate to idle.

reset the cutoff button thing? (pass side of firewall black button)
did all of the connectors get plugged back in correctly? check the IAC valve plug. are you sure the throttle cables are on there correctly?

Good to know.

There was some mystery as to if it was the HG that failed since the gasket was not clearly blown through. The dealers compression test lead them to believe it was an HG. I drove her yesterday and the day before and had to top off the coolant a couple times, I'm assuming that's just a little air left in the system. She seems to be holding a steady level now which is a good sign. Let's hope it stays that way *knock on wood*.

Haha thanks. It was a lot of work but it was worth it. A good learning experience and I saved roughly 2.5k doing it myself. It looks intimidating, in fact I am still surprised I got it apart, together again, and running, but it really was not as bad as I had thought.

I was REALLY proud when I did this on my '00 DII. It really gave me a lot of confidence in future wrenchin' adventures. It's a bitch of a job, but it's nice to have one of the few Discos in town that doesn't constantly smell of coolant.

Pretty much anytime you do a headjob on a GEMS or motronics engine, resetting the adaptive values is required. You have changed all of the relationships in the engine and the computer isn't going to know what's going on for a while.

Won't the ECM learn the new adaptations itself? I've never reset the adaptations after doing head gaskets on GEMS, Bosch, or 14CUX trucks. I didn't even reset them after doing a short block in my DII.

yes, eventually it will, but resetting them make the change immediate.
