Electrical Problems

Well I finally have time to start trying to figure out the little electrical problems with the truck, a 98 Discovery.

1. First the rear windows do not go down. I pulled the window ecu today but it looks almost perfect. One of the pins for the relay on the board looks like it could use a re-solder. I am going to do that tomorrow and see if it helps but not sure because it doesn't feel loose at all. See the link for the picture of the board with one solder joint pointed out.

2. The electric seats do not work. I haven't looked at the fuses under the seats but that is where I am going to start. If they are good I am going to try taking them apart and cleaning the contacts. Besides that I don't know where else to look.

3. The heated seats do not work. Don't know where to start.

4. Front passenger side blinker doesn't work causing a fast blinker. Changed the bulb, didn't help. I am going to try and look for a short on this one which brings me to ask, are there electrical diagrams available online?

Could #'s 1, 2, & 3 be related?

Also it looks like the PO tried to wire up some lights on the rack but only got as far as running the wires under the dash. First thing I am going to do is follow these to see what I find.

Everything else electrical seems to work fine **knock on wood**. Anyway any tips on trying to solve these problems would help me out a bunch.

Always check the earth points, especially on Disco 1 vehicles.

All the RAVE manuals are available on line, www.landroverresource.com or on the Green Oval website.

The seat ECU problem is well known, usually turns out to be a dodgy solder connection.

All of the RAVE manuals have the schematics, but you may need a bit of time to understand them, particularly the Disco 1 stuff.

Give me a shout if you need help with them.

Well fixing that one little solder joint on the ecu fixed the window issue.

One down three to go.

I'll check all the earth points once it stops raining here which could be a couple of days.

Also I don't see the schematics in the RAVE manual.

1 -you must resolder this point. It is corroded by the time, was not bad soldered.
2&3 fuse issue.
4 - You shall check for another burned bulb. If blinker does ok tn the drivers side, the only difference is the quantity of filaments.

Glad that one is OK.

The electrical schematics on both Disco 1 and Disco 2 manuals are in the first section, after you click on the Land Rover icon on the start-up splash image:

Disco 2 - 'Electrical Circuit Diagrams'

Disco 1 - 'Electrical Troubleshooting Manuals' - (Select Model) - 'Circuit'.

I think you are dead on for all my problems haha. I re-soldered the ecu, fixed. When I was checking all the fuses under the dash I first used one of them probes with an LED on it to check them without removing the fuses. I must have skipped over the one for the heated seats, vanity mirror, cigarette lighter because I pulled it out and sure enough it was blown. Replaced and fixed.

I replaced the 4 fuses under the driver's seat. They all looked good and continuity was good but it fixed the seat problem, almost. The bottom driver seat won't go forward or backward.

Now just need to figure out this blinker. I am going to check all the other bulbs tomorrow. Every one appears to be in working order though.
