I'd start with a D110, and:

1. take the fenders off
2. get a 1/2 cab cabin & build a truggy/exocage
3. replace front axle with Salisbury (shaved, 35 spline, ARBs, 4.88)
4. beef up rear axle (shaved, 35 spline, ARBs, 4.88)
5. Slap in a stock 4.6 with the nice ZF and the Underdrive
6. WE beadlocks with 42" Iroks
7. Coil overs f/r with 3 link front, stock rear A-arm with custom lowers
8. dual winches
9. radiator, fuel tank, batteries, tools, etc...placed between rear axle and cabin
10. basically what I have now but with a smaller cabine and better axles...& .4 more engine :)

Well I have a 95 D1.

While its simple, it works on and off road.

Unlimited supply of time and money (ie trust fund) would be handy to be able to travel in it around the place whenever and whereever I like

Yeah, I would give up my left liver for a D90  ...or is that left kidney ;)
It's what I wanted in the first place but had to settle for a D1. All the used D90s I saw on eBay and in auto magazines were hovering around $35 - 40K
I don't know about all the mods but I'd settle for a stock D90 with just a Terri Hatcher in the passenger seat :p

X2, mine's pretty much stock and does everything I ask of her...

If I had more money, I'd buy more land in Fortuna, CA to drive my 95 D1 (her name is 'Dot') around on!

I would start with some coil overs
a 3-link in the front
RTE 5" lift kit (minus springs and shocks of course)
a 12000 worm drive winch
Unimog portals with cable lockers
35-37" Simex tires
some type of diesel swap, lets just say 300Tdi to keep it Rover
a Hannibal rack and tent with an awning
RTE front bumper with a-bar (if the winch will fit)
rear bumper similar to Mark Pilkington's Bobtail RRC, primarily built out of a pipe cut in half long ways
sliders similar to Nathan Woods' LR3
internal cage
5 point racing seats (front and back)
bed liner on the floor
a decent stereo
and some snazzy lights on the roof rack and bumper.

International HS 2.3 TD, upgraded ZF and LT230. Lose as many computers as possible.
Complete restoration, Coniston green paint, RRC Seats in a tan, Non-leaking sunroofs, everything should be galvanized, por 15'd, powdercoated or the like.
Mantec Snorkle
Salisbury's front and rear, with all the best HD gear, can't say off the top of my head since its a pipedream.
Jac Mac lockers
Rack and Cage a la the Camel Trophy(no gutter mounts)
frame mounted sliders
Trek Rear bumper
Custom front, improvements to the KVT design
Superwinch H12P, with a completely flawless hydraulic setup
Hella Rallye 4000 HIDs, with the rings painted black
Oasis on-board air
A set of ~34x9 Simexs, and a set of 8.25 XZLs both mounted on cream colored NATOs.
Custom 4-link suspension with Foxs. Doesn't need tons of flex, suitable for on and off road.
heated windscreen.

But what I really want is a coil-conversion on a Series IIa 109. 2-door Softtop. Desert Tan. International HS 2.3, Lt 230 and ZF. Exmoor seats covered in leather. Basically with all the same specs as listed above.

I'll trade a fully built clean, rather capable and kitted 04d2 with hd front and rear axels and arb lockers for a clean d90-with some spare change...d90 can be stock...its about the only thing I'd part with my d2 for..wait

do the d90s have auto climate control??

when lifted do the d90s need as much work to keep driveline axels in check?

sorry, I'll keep my d2 over a d1, just feels more civilized on road..(where is my flame retardant suit)
