Im having engine temperature problems at 135,000 miles this thread http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=77112

so im considering my options.
I love my truck (not sure why)
2004 Discovery.

Engines - whos got new ones ,not rebuilds ??

Atlantic british says there blocks have been re-engineered to eliminate sleeve slip and head gasket leaks.
This sounds good to me as id hate to do head gaskets again at 100,000 miles.
I dont know how they can say this though.
I put 9000 into truck last year between head gaskets , bumpers , winches, fuel pump , bushings ,
springs and shocks for second time around ,window regulators , high output alt , new radiator water pump
all hoses thermostat , radius arms , blah blah blah and now im fucked.

Any other search only comes up with used engines and im back where i started.
WHAT i want is a complete new engine with a complete new transmission .

Diesel conversion , sounds good but im not sure of the legal aspects in N.Y. and getting inspected.

4 Door Rubicon , nice truck but im not sure it suits me.

4x4 van , cant afford a new one and buying used puts me back where im at ,high mileage other problems.

Jim,
you aren't alone in this boat. But buying a new engine doesn't necessarily buys you another 135kmi.
If I were you, I'd look for an early P38A 4.6 or 97-99 D1/P38A 4.0.

I'm looking for a new engine as well...still runs good but having lots of problems with mine. I'd rather go new than refurb as well but they don't even have the 4.6 for the 03-04 d2's on atlantic british. I'd purchase one wherever if someone offers them.

I just talked to Dan at D&D Fab a few days ago about getting an engine built. Very pricey, but at least you know it's gonna get done right.

What do you mean getting an engine built.

Once sleeves start slipping isnt the block a throw away.??
is getting built mean they reseat the sleeves ? and how do they seal them in.
I can only imagine heat the block in an oven , put the sleeves in liquid nitrogen and then
install.this is how sleeving an aluminum aircraft axel is done.

Thanks for all the inputs , keep it coming.

Anyone with a 4.6 with head gaskets done with low mileage i may consider.
Im not even sure land rover can supply a 4.6 new.

thanks guys.

PT where are you located ??
I can cruise i just cant stop.

Where is the guy who posted a couple weeks ago who had just bought the new 4.6 from the uk, one of the coscast blocks, maybe?

Im sure we would all like to know more on this.

A while back (year or so?) a guy put a video up of him heating a 4.6 block on a grill and the sleeves just slid right out....not good.

Rebuilt would mean resleeving with top hat liners and pinning (optional). When my '03 goes, I'm considering this (anyone know the cost?) since new(er) engines are hard to find, and very costly.

Edit: Found the thread on the moving liners

I think a complete block sleeveing from Mark @ d&d runs about $2500.00 I may be wrong.
Then you add all the other expenses, piston rings, rod and main bearings, cam and lifters, timing components, oil pump and gaskets and seals just for the block... then comes the upper engine work, heads, valves, bolts gaskets etc...
add labor if you plan on having a shop do the overhaul, of course removal and install and the dreaded bits and pieces, oil, coolant, engine mounts etc.
all in all about a months turn around (depending on d&d turn) and about 5 to 6 grand.
I had a 4.0 block and a blown 4.2, between trial and error and many nights at a machine shop we were able to custom cut /grind a chevy 350 crank to fit the rover block, then used a combination of chevy and rover internals to stroke the beast to a funny 4.8.9777777.... which I call a custom built 5.0 rover, used a crower cam and this animal came out extremely torquie.. blew thru 3 hp22 trannies in the first year, knock on wood Im doing better on the 4th trannie it has been 2 yrs on it.
all together set me back some 3k in parts I did all the labor, my inlaws own a farm and about once a month we run a round trip of 90 miles to get hay, normally I scale 14,000 lbs and run the highway at 60 t0 70 mph while pulling a 20 ft flatbed trailer... it tends to run a little over the mid mark temp but only when pulling a 2% grade and pushing it.
61k miles on the new engine and still purrs like kitten, have developed 2 leaks, one at the front of the valley pan one on the back of the ps pump.

As for building an engine, if one wants a "perfect" block, pull the liners out, pressurize the block, weld up any cracks, machine the welds down, press the liners in and machine down the deck and you're good to go.

If it turns out i need an engine i would rather rebuild the unreliablity factor out of it , instead of getting another new eng from L.R. and doing head gaskets at 80,000.

711 miles from 11787 12 hours
easy drive.
can i drop it off first thing in morning pick up by 6pm and be on my way ?

seriously im looking local for someone with the knowledge to do this right ,i dont think i will find it.may be you know someone in the north east??

Im in va if you are willing to drive this way, I actually have a block which upon demand will be sent to mark for top lining.

Mark has blocks, no need to ship him one.

I wouldn't even try to do an engine swap in a single day, would you want the truck that had that done?

I intentionally don't work fast, for one thing I don't want to work that hard!

We did a 4.6 with some machine work for about $7k out the door, add the $ for the block work and you'd be close. I take a LONG time fit the crank and connecting rods, it's an important step I learned to do a long time ago and I like to think I'm good at it. An engine I built in 1982 (complete with a $1000 machine shop bill in 1980 dollars) is still running and is in the second body. I did the engine swap in '95.

ive pinned a 4.6 and repl all the bearings and will be installing it in my buds 03 d2 next weekend........

the donor block had a knock when warm at idle but other than that the bearing looked perfect and that motor had perfect service history through our shop so i know it never overheated and oil changes 3k-3500.......so we will see if the pinning works

the video mentioned above was very eye-opening for me as our shop has done countless engines over my 11 yrs and to see the liners move at the temps he was showing was just a major wow factor

I was joking about a one day engine change.

As things are going it is operating normaly. WTF go figure.
Im going long distance today , cruising and traffic hopefully i will have no issues.

This is a strange intermittant problem.
Im thinking i bled it well enough for now anyway untill air gets back into system.
