JSQ -

Hope I can ask a question in the midst of this skirmish:

What were you hunting?

Do they hold 'til flushed or run?

Does Madeline point or just retrieve?

Great dog, nice pics.

Thanks,

Jack P.

Sure.

We were hunting Gambel's quail.
Scaled quail and Mearn's quail are also present in the region, but the grassy foothills hold mostly Gambel's.

They like to run when they are in a covey. If you can sufficiently break them up, then the singles can hold very tightly, but they are fast on their feet and use it to their advantage. Being that this hunt took place during the last weekend of the season in an area with somewhat constant hunting pressure, the birds were educated. These were the survivors who made it this far because of their superior evasion instincts. They were tough to get after. A lot more difficult then my thanksgiving trip or even when I went in december.

Madeline flushes and retrieves.
Not a pointer.

you notice how none of the usual suspects are posting on this. not sure why.

I admit it amused me at first now I jsut think its getting a little bullyish.

Jack you made your point. Discoweb is never going to be what it was, take it for what it is.

If you really want to improve it start posting some tech, some how too's post your pictures here instead of EE. But its getting a little sickening to watch you beat up on Sus. No she doesnt post tech , but honestly i dont think she is hurting a damn thing.

Lead by example works best in my opinion.

Maybe you would be better served to start using the ignore feature yourself.

Thanks.

I had a Golden that hunted up until age 12. I hunted dove and duck with him as a young dog, but where he really shined was pheasant. His first wild pheasant was as a 9 y/o in South Dakota. My hunting companions voted him 'best dog' on our first trip -his disposition and 'style' was just suited to that type of hunting.

It's hard to beat a retriever - whatever the breed - for a companion and hunting partner. I know guys that load up to duck or bird hunt and leave the dog at home!! WTF - working the dog is the most enjoyable part of the hunt for me.

And yeah stocker RR is where it's at...I'm a believer of 'less CAN be MORE'.

Rawb,

This thread has 173 views. It's hardly on the collective radar for dweb. Furthermore, I'd say it's less of a roundtable discussion or as curtis put it "a wholesale roasting of jack" and more of a direct dialogue. It doesn't suprise me that none of the "usual suspects" aren't posting in it. I'm sure if they were aware of it, they'd begin to smother it with posts about heating pumps and the like. I think they merely haven't noticed or they'd be employing their favorite tactic.

I'm a little beyond making a point and I'm working a bit towards making a difference. I'm still involved in tech. I'm still going to call people on their BS. I'm still going to contribute to the substantive chit chat. But I'm not going to pretend like certain people don't have it out for me and "ignore" it. I think the difference between you and me, as it is with Curtis, is that I don't think dweb is dead. I don't think the halcyon days are gone never to return. It's still got potential. But it's not going to happen overnight and this omelette won't be made with out breaking a few eggs. I don't pretend to speak for the collective and I don't claim any authority beyond my own opinion, but I'm sure as hell going to stand by that.

And you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm going to weigh it against what I've seen. What I remember, all too clearly was you repeatedly laying into Jaimie Veltman. Someone who I actually think improved dweb rather than detracted from it. I didn't think she was "hurting a damn thing", but I think that Susannah does. So if you think I'm being "bullyish", I submit I'm no moreso than you have been and we each have done it for our own reasons.

The example I'm setting is exactly what I hope to see in others. I'm not looking to just web joust for the sake of conflict alone only to have the parties retire unchanged and ready to replay the scene again in short order. If nothing changes it was hardly worthwhile. If I think Susannah is guilty of the same transgressions she was before and if she makes a concerted effort to both perpetuate them and mock my criticism, don't expect me to lay off. Somebody is going to learn something sooner or later.

Or, maybe we do see it........

But, you have to read between the lines.

In other words, no one really gives a shit. Your hunting is lame. you have pics of what, one bird and how many of your picnic and hunting gloves?

fair enough. i did flip out on jamie that once or twice but she was really bugging me ;)

discoweb is not lost, its just never going to be what it was. there were so many variations of it that its hard to say which was your favorite. its not so bad now if you dont let the chit chat bother you. still tech, still people gettting together to wheel, just more BS, that's going to happen with a larger community.

It's true.

There are no degenerate tailgate bodycount pics and no 7-11 hotdogs and mountain dew.

I guess I just don't know my audience.

There are definitely still gems and it certainly has it's moments.

Like you said, my discoweb heyday may not have been yours or anyone elses. I'm sure there are some who think the current iterration is the pinnacle of its glory.

Everyone gets there equal chance to contribute to what they think makes it worthwhile. That's pretty fair to me.

Who knows, a Brave New World could be just around the corner...

Yes Jack, if you are so intent upon teaching the entire Dweb community all that you have learned in your long life...then perhaps you should see that the example you are setting and the lessons you would like people to learn are that having a negative and condescending attitude is not the way to get people to pay attention to what you say or do. If you are trying to lead by example, then perhaps you should try to address people in a way that is constructive and not degrading. Perhaps you should be consistent when it comes to what you call BS.

I really hate to take your bait here, but if I recall correctly, you too jumped on Jamie and made fun of her for asking questions. I could be wrong, so I'll do a search to see. I do know that she and I shared quite a few email conversations where she mentioned how mean everyone was to her on Dweb. I watched all of that come and go and I've stayed out of the tech section unless I actually have something to contribute. I don't have as much knowledge as some on this board, which is why I have continued to read and learn and ask questions when I felt they were appropriate. You honestly can NOT blame the demise of your precious Dweb on me alone and you know it. I do contribute positively to this board and I do my best to stay out of the crap on most occasions.

At least I don't post picture after picture of women wrestling in mud from carstuckgirls.com. (http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showpost.php?p=323587&postcount=113) (http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showpost.php?p=104919&postcount=82) Explain to me how those types of contributions are any worse than my smiley faces and laughs.

Great line.

Come to the midwest, you'd get to see plenty of "that" style of hunting. A case of Busch, with cans littering the area is always a touch of class.

My personal favorite is the "ducks flying", deer "tracks", or silohette "bowhunter" stickers on the back windows of pickups.

On a side note these are often seen in conjuction with truck nuts.

Slob hunters are everywhere. It's definitely not limited to just one region.

Even some of my friends are slob hunters. I really wish they weren't, but it's the reality.

I can't hunt with them.

We can still be friends, but I'm not comprimising my time in the field with them. It's tough because these seemingly good guys act like jackasses every time they hunt and it really doesn't do anything to help fieldsports. I want to remove myself from it, but I feel like a chump if I just stand idly by while they do their worst.

I can agree with that.

It's gonna be a sad day when I see that on a Rover, but I know it's coming.

My 'new' 2 y/o Golden hunts sticks and deer shit....He's not much of a retriever either - unless there is food involved.

I didn't spend the training time with him as a puppy like I did the older dog - too much other stuff going on. He's still a good pet though.
