If you want a semi auto rifle that you can hunt with (assuming it is legal to hunt with a semi auto where you live) get a DS Arms FN FAL or a PTR-91.

If you want a semi-auto shotgun, get a remmington/winchester/mossberg 12 guage.

IMHO everyone needs:
1. A 12 guage
2. A pistol
3. An AR15/FN FAL/Ak clone/Hk91 clone
4. A bolt action hunting/sniper gun
5. A 10-22
6. as many extra guns as he can afford

For a first gun I'd say a .22 of some sort - Ruger 10/22 would be perfect. Fun, cheap, relatively accurate out-of-the-box.

If you plan on going out to hunt something the next day, get a shotgun with a barrel combo package. Remington's 870 Express is a cheap and reliable choice. Can get rifled slug barrel, turkey barrel, field barrel; then add chokes as necessary.

For your first gun, I'd suggest looking into a Barrett Model 82A1. Nothing says "that gopher deserved it" like a 50 cal semi auto. :)

Seriously though, my first rifle was a 10/22 and my first shotgun was a Winchester single shot .410. Still have both and love them.

Like every civic minded person I just picked up my first AR-15. I picked up the Remington VTR carbine with collapsible stock and full camo paint. Looking for a good scope cause it's a flat top, I'll be using this for coyotes. If you want something like an AR or anything elese with a detachable magazine and pistol grip you better hurry up! Once Obama's in all that's gone. Give him some time and if it has a trigger it will be illegal and we'll have to register sling shots. Hurry!

I love the idae of an AR15, but I'm thinking more realistically. The price of Ammo was a great tip. A day at a range woudl be much cheaper with a .22 then a .308. I was thinking a shotgun, benelli M2 field, but since my parents have one then never use, I could probably take their when they get their new guns this christmas. So i'm now thinking of a bolt action 22 like a remington model 5. Any Thoughts on this choice? Should I get a larger cal bolt action for hunting right away, or would borrowing the shotgun can loading it with slugs be ok for the occaisonal hog hunt?

Don't know what he has against Wolf ammo, I've shout a couple thousand rounds of 9mm, .223 and 7.62x38 with zero issues. It's a little underpowered compared to most higher end ammo which equates to about an extra 1" of drop per 100 yards give or take. It's also a little dirtier, but unless you pan on shooting 1000 rounds per range trip or you're afraid to clean a gun after a trip, it's nothing to worry about.

I would buy a Ruger 10/22, or any bolt-action .22 used it you can, and learn the basics of aiming, and accounting for wind/ bullet drop. You'll save more than the cost of the .22 in ammo learning and getting comfortable shooting, and tehy're always fun to take to the range $15 for 500rds much more fun that $15 for 5-50rds depending on caliber for a center-fire rifle. Then research the local laws about hunting boars and whatever else you want to hunt, use that info to pick a rifle that will work for you. Don't waste money on a .223 if you need a .240 or larger round to legally hunt. The Remington 700 line is a good go-to platform, they're available in almost any caliber, and while not as accurate as top of the line rifles, they're reasonably priced and accurate.

The AR15 is a great platform, standard .223 is a good round, and you can swap uppers and mags to 6.8 or .50 beowolf for some extra oompf, and an AR10 in .308 is a good option for larger game, but I would get a bolt or lever action for my first and or only hunting rifle.

The guy with the list is right! So far I have a 10/22 (which is a fucking awesome gun! Its sent more bunnies to the after life than anything I own,) an old Winchester model 12, a HK USP .45, and a rem 700 VSF in 22-250 (for target and prairie dog destruction.) I think I am going to try to get an AR when I get back to the states before the B.O. Admin spoils my plans. Then a bolt action .50 BMG and a 308 sometime after. I don't know anything about shooting boar but I would think something bigger than a .22 class round would be better like the .243 or .270.

FNAR or M-1A in .308 might not be a bad option either. The M-1A carbine in .308 that Springfield is making now is a pretty awesome setup. Ruger Mini-14 is another you might consider.

I'd say get a romania AK. Make sure you look at a bunch. There is a lot of platicity in their quality. I picked up a real nice one for about 200 bucks that is extremely accurate after I crowned the bore. AKs are a lot of fun to shoot and ammo is dirt cheap. Case of 1000 for like 70 bucks

PS, I run only wolf through my AK, but would never run it through my RRA Ar15. A little too dirty for my liking. Wolf is great for the range for most guns, but .223 no thanks

First thing first! Do you know anything about firearms? Safety, cleaning or even know how to shoot? If you have never really shot go small. Learn how to use a .22 and then move up the ladder. Go to a range and work on your breathing so as to hit the target and or bullseye. Take a shooting lesson on a skeet or trap course and then move to sporting clays. Buy a semi-auto 12g with interchangeable chokes that way one shotgun with give you a variety of thing you can hunt. Then yes build your collection.

Hmmm. 1000 rounds for $70? From where?
