Flanged Liners - Who's Better?

Looking at Turner (mfg by Darton here n US) and Westwood. Both ship from UK as I haven't found a US supplier that will sell just the liners. Turner is about $125 more for the set and has the O-ring, whereas Westwood is a little less and has no O-ring (allows for overbore in future - doubtful I'll need this as my daughter drives it).

Any experience that would steer me to one or the other? My daughter's rig lost a sleeve so it's time to pull the trigger.

Thanks,

Greg

When I did the flanged liners in my current truck, I went with the o-ring liners from Darton. I liked the idea of the o-ring preventing any potential cracks behind the sleeve from leaking coolant down into the oil sump. I have seen machinists claim the o-ring is unnecessary, but I felt like it wouldn't hurt to have an extra layer of protection. Considering the cost of doing the rebuild, I didn't want to do it again. I did repeat the rebuild after ~2000 miles, but for an unrelated reason and the flanged liners are still there.

I had my block pressure tested upon removing the original sleeves. The shop said the block was good, but I didn't expect the o-rings to be a detriment. I agree that o-rings are not necessary, but erred on the side of caution thinking if a crack/porosity were to develop behind the sleeves, I might be able to Rover on unimpeded.

That said, the machine shop I used to install the sleeves can go fuck themselves with the biggest object they can find. The dickheads used a sanding block to "deck" my block and "true" my heads. They ordered the wrong size cam bearings and installed them. The list goes on, hence the re-rebuild after 2000 miles.

The machine shop I went to this time around did a much better job of checking and machining the block, volunteering to send photos along the way. I went through everything myself, rebuilding anything questionable. Thanks for the parts, by the way, P.T. Schram. I am happy you encouraged me to rebuild the rocker shaft assemblies. They needed it.

Good stuff guys - thanks!

And PT, I tried D&D several times yesterday and no one ever picked up. I will try again today as time allows. Thanks for the info!

I bought a long block from Turner with Darton liners. That was 5 years and about 75,000 KM ago. No complaints.

I just finished replacing the failed 4.6 Bosch in my '03 D2 with a 4.0 gems from an old '96 D1 I have. I elected to leave the 4.0 heads on it and plug the SAI vacuum lines for now. Everything seems to be running along fine.

It may be my imagination, but it does seem to feel a little less peppy than the 4.6 was...
