98 Cameron P38 with 42k miles.
Nasty mechanical noises at idle, very rough running, no codes or check engine light.

Removed the crankshaft position and sensor:eek:

Reluctor ring gear damaged. (photo with inspection plate removed)

Straightened Crankshaft position sensor and bent tab on reluctor ring, turned engine over by hand ,checked for clearance. Idled fine but under load around 3500rpm the same problem reoccurred.

So whats going on here ?
Is this a flex plate related problem?

That's not the flex plate, the flex plate should be nearer to the torque converter. That looks like one of the spacer rings between the crankshaft and the flywheel.

I didn't realize this was a supercharged truck. That changes everything.

Run a compression test, I suspect you'll find lower compression on one, two, seven and eight.

Thanks

98 RR Cameron , but not one fitted with a super charger and under 50k miles.

The transmission will be coming out one way or another,

how does it sound with the new crank sensor in? those plates do have a habit of cracking and if it is sounds terrible or if not completely cracked it would cause vibrations off of idle when throttle is opened. lets get that trans out and see!

Sounds horrible, with the reluctor ring teeth straightened, and crankshaft sensor replaced, RR idled smoothly but once under load around 3500 rpm the symptoms repeated, time for the transmission to come out and get a better idea of what's going on and why. The RR has under 50 k miles

and also - keeping with the keep it simple paradigm - did you guys check to make sure all the tc/fw bolts were tight?

98 Cameron RR P38 with under 50k no supercharger.

With the half moon access panel removed to view reluctor ring, did try and check all bolts by rotating engine with a socket on crankshaft pulley but some of the bolts visable were not centered in their holes and could not get a socket or wrench on them , ( did something move as part of a broken flex plate)

With the reluctor ring and crankshaft sensor straightened the RR idled smoothly, but when under load at 3,500rpm the problem repeated itself.

It will be interesting to see what's what when you pull it all apart

If the flex plate is the culprit , why does it crack? And is there any point in having one made using better quality steel?
