Does the Ford 6.0 suck as much as it sound like from reading reviews?

I am thinking about getting a ford to use as a daily driver/work truck and found a nice 2004 with 121K on it at a used truck place that caught my eye. But it has the 6.0 turbo in it and just from doing a little research it sounds like they are problem motors. Any of your guys have experience with them?

Sounds like a lot of very expensive and very frequent EGR and head gasket problems. I want to get something that going to be very reliable (which my D2 isn't). I put 80 to 160 miles on my daily driver at least five days a week and tow a trailer a few days a week, and I don't want to put the miles on my D2 anymore. Should I stay away from the 6.0 and find a 7.3?

Well I've spent the evening reading on ford sites and I don't think I want to get into a 6.0... Sounds like there are some that don't have major issues, but there are a lot that do. I need something that is going to be real reliable and would rather not chance it with that motor. I can afford a truck, but I can't afford to be doing expensive repairs all the time. I want a totally stock truck and don't feel like or have the time to mess with EGR stuff.

So those of you with 7.3 experience what should I look for, any years better then other or anything?

A 7.3 or a 6.6 are stouter engines but if you don't modify the 6.0, really it should be fine. People start running into problems with them when they start adding chips, turbos, etc.

Problem is finding a 3/4 or 1 ton that isn't all beaten to shit...

I've heard that about the 6.0 and modding it.. I don't want to buy a truck with any mods and don't plan on doing any, but I still want to avoid potential issues.. The only thing I like about the 6.0 would be the better mpg.

& from my little bit of looking around a lot of them are beat up. The truck with the 6.0 I was looking at was a 1 ton with only 121K on it and it was in decent/good shape. Now that I've been looking for a 7.3 I've found a 3/4 ton with 100K on it that I'm going to look at today that sounds like it's in good shape.

Anyways what kind of mpg should I see in a totally stock 3/4 ton extended cab short bed with a 7.3 in it?

I hated the 6.0. They were in our tour buses last year.

We had lots of problems with it, and 3 months before tour ended, it went out completely. Threw a rod, the inside of the motor basically exploded. There are pics somewhere on my facebook account.

I drove Justin's 6.0 on the way down to SCARR and under a load that thing was a miserable dog. The thing was up over 3k revs to go 75 down the highway (to be fair it was pulling Justin's rover, an ill tempered spotted dog and three fat men).

Not really, also looking at Chevy 2500's. I just don't know as much about the ford motors.

Ford motors are actually made my International. Best diesel out there is Cummins, hands down. A lot of guys are swapping them into F250/F350.

The 6.0 has significant more power/torque than the 7.3.

I've got a 98 Dodge with the Cummins and the 5-speed. The only work in the last 5 years has been a new pair of batteries --- and I can pull away from a stoplight faster than other traffic while pulling a trailer with 6k worth of firewood. :D

If you are looking for a clean diesel 3/4 ton pick up, I would suggest that you use Autotrader.com and search in the Texas area, especially Dallas. There are a LOT of them available in TX and for very good prices...low miles too.

For whatever reason the Chevy/GMC diesels seem to sell at a higher price than the Fords, but the Fords are more common/plentiful (may be that's the reason for the price difference).

Lots of Ford 3/4 diesels around here in OK and the owners I know love them. They will note that the GM Duramax trucks do get better fuel mileage than the Ford Powerstrokes.

My pops has an 06 ford f350 2wd with the 6.0, he gets unloaded about 19 to 20 mpg on the hwy, loaded pulling 28ft 5th wheel he told me he got between 9 to 12. Only problems he's had so far was some o-ring failing near the oil filter with caused the engine to shut down. Oh and his truck is stock no mods.
