I like how Steve trys to act like he is doing John a favor, then Ryan jumps on. I am not going to debate who is right, just your brash response to someone trying to do something nice. If you wanted to let the guy know he is possibly doing something illegal, pm him, call him or email him, he gave you all that contact info.
What I see here is Steve being typical of himself. Steve this is the reason I stay away from you at MAR you are a self righteous pain in the ass. I think this proves it once again.
Just leave the guy alone, don't try to know everything at put him on the defense.

why don't some people just shut the hell up? He is dist. helpful info. Just like everyone that comes here and asks for info. He is not profiting from this so just let it be, if you can't handle it don't make a fuss and move on, let the people who need help on here get the help they need. Ahh shit, cops are knocking on my door...J/K :)

The Lou!
Tidewater Rocks!

I've bought parts from John way before I even heard of Discoweb. I spy his stuff on eBay all the time and he has been nothing but helpful each time I've ordered. I would rather buy from John in North Carolina that I've never met than to buy from the local Rover junkyard. Even if you don't want a free R**E CD I'd highly recommend giving him some biz.

Jam on!

I was advised that if I gave a cd away there are no copyright infringments. As I am not recieving any monetary gain. This was upon the advice of legal counsel.

John, I'll be contacting you to get some parts, but I do feel compelled to mention a couple of things. While I too think it's an extremely nice gesture, I'd hate to see a good parts supplier to go under because of lawsuits.

Does your legal counsel specialize in patent/copyright/trademark law? My ex used to work (as a technical advisor) in a law firm that specialized in that and it's not like criminal or contract law. There's even a separate bar exam for it.
A lot of people, even attorneys, aren't aware that the Digital Millenium Copyright Act made even a lot of formerly "Fair Use" copying illegal. I believe first offense (I could be wrong on this) is up to $250,000 fine and/or several years in prison.
In the past, lawyers for owners of the Land Rover marque, particularly BMW, have been extremely harsh towards people they deemed were infringing.
I'm sure I'll get flamed by people for "attacking you", but I'm not. Just providing a bit more information for your consideration.

Wasn't Napster distributing music for free? Will our beloved Discoweb get shut down, too?

I am a lawyer...

but I do not specialize in copyright or trademark law. However, I have represented individuals who have been sued by the music industry for downloading music illegally. Tom is correct with his legal assesment. While I will not provide legal advise on state law outside of Texas, I will tell you that under Federal law it is illegal to distribute copied copyrighted material. You can buy a cd or dvd and make a copy for the house and for the car and for the beach house, etc, but you can't give it to your neighbor or your friend. If the cd you are referring to is copyrighted and you make copies for the discoweb crowd, you are violating federal law. I am not your lawyer and I don't know anything about the cd you are referring to, but I suggest you get another legal opinion. The minimum settlement for the music downloading cases is $3K to $4K plus your attorneys' fees. I would hate for you to get hit with something similar or worse. Rovers are expensive enough without this bs.
