i am sure the Freelander is a great little SUV and all. my beef is that there are just as good and cute little SUVs out there for far less money.
honestly i'd rather have a Ford Escape. i don't see much on the Freelander that justifies the price gap.
the US market and people have spoken......they agree.

I think I read an article in one of the car magazines a few years ago about testing the Liberty and Freelander head to head off road. If I remember, the Freelander won the contest, at least in the eyes of the writer. I'd guess the Freelander is quite a bit more capable than an escape.

Ugh... have you driven a Ford Escape? I drove it when my dad test drove a bunch of small SUVs(Freelander, Highlander, Escape and the Mercury equibalent, etc.). Felt like a piece of shit as I drove it personally. The Freelander has a nice ride compared to the Escape.

True though that the price of the Freelander kills it. That's what kept my dad from even considering it. The Highlander was fully loaded for less money. Same thing that makes Honda Accord V6s fully loaded more desirable than Jaguars and BMWs.

I guess it all boils down to how you like your ride to feel. Kinda like your women(or men). Different strokes for different folks.

The Freelander has outpriced itself in its class. If I wanted carlike, I'd get a 'Yota or a Honda. Otherwise, for the price of the Freelander you can get a more off-road oriented truck. Or at least something bigger. hehehe.

The only reason I see for getting a Freelander is if you really like it that much. :D

well at least in BMW case, the accord fully loaded isn't near close to a BMW. It's cheaper cuz it's inferior.

Freelander.... the first stake in LR coffin :(

What makes it inferior? It'll get better gas mileage, cause you less problems/hassle and I'm pretty sure parts cost less money. So... maybe you can't accelerate as fast as in the BMW, but I don't think it's much slower and unless you're tracking the car, there doesnt appear to be as much of a need for that speed.

This is not supposed to be a hostile question.

drive one? crisper handling, better accleration, high quality material...gas mileage that big of difference? naw, besides you get alot better performance out of the bmw. Reliability, well it's all in how the vechiles taken care off. I've seen lots of old honda's and yeah they got 300-400k on them but shit they burn oil like crazy, and basically they are POS. People just thinkg "wow this just won't die" but is most cases they are too damn cheap to fix things as they go and they literlary have to fall off the car and make it not driveable.

But hey, if you want to compare how the resell value is then yeah i guess a honda is better huh? German engineering vs japan though...well argue all you want.

I guess all that hits the nail on the head...

I would rather drive a Freelander rather than an Escape, CRV, Highlander.... etc....
it all comes down to brand preference... you can't argue agaisnt that - to each his own.....

want to be practical...buy a Hyundia and get a 10 yr powertrain warranty.....

wawnt to drive a car you will really like - then get what you want - if a $35K or $40K freelander is it - then so be it...

same thing as saying - why buy a Defender for $20K when it break often, and rusts.... and so on..... why ? becuase you like it.:banghead:

Heres a few, nothing hardcore...

So, its cool to hang a bit of iron on a small runabout and hang a tire 18" in the air every time you go over a small bump?

Nice little car, test drove one a couple of times. But those pictures are just a dressed up station wagon in combat boots. My 82 year old Mother can wear combat boots and a flak jacket.

LOL.. That Freelander has seen more wheeling than 50% of the pousers on this forum.. LOL

Besides, the EXACT same thing can also be said to quite a number of Disco owners.

I first drove a freelander within a week of its introduction to the UK in 1998. I liked it then, (1.8 liter gas engine from the MGF) I like it now, but give me the TD4 over the V6 anyday

Hey, new to the forums here. I love the freelanders, great little car. Mine is stock with street tires and i have outdone every other stock discovery i have seen on the sand =)... pulled out two discovery 1s and a range rover (new style vogue i think) of the sand.
Yes you can mod a disco more than a freelander, But then again you can mod a Suzuki Sierra (or similar vehicle) to be just as good or better than a LR. i've seen the Suzuki's doing stuff a Land Rover could NEVER do.... so i guess you 'hardcore offroaders' should go get Suzuki's huh? ;)

Uhm... no. This whole argument really goes back to the you drive what you want. I could have bought a jeep, I wanted a Disco. If you want to offroad in your freelander, go ahead, I won't ever be offroading in anything with IFS after seeing it break so many times on trails when I lived out in Colorado... But if you want to, go ahead.
