front bumper question/request

I am wanting to replace my cracked plastic front bumper with a steel winch compatable bumper. I also want to keep my fog lamps. ARB is the only maker in the US that I can find. I found one in the UK but having it shipped is cost prohibitive. TJM made one at one time but no longer make it. It seems there was a HLC fab but they seems to have disappeared/closed. Can the terra firma front be modified to fit the lamps. I have not seen the back side of the bumper. I have a couple friends who can fab up the holes and make the mounts if it is feasible.

Does anyone have any pics of the terra firma from all angles? Any other suggestions. The arb is fine if thats my only option but i prefer one without the brushgaurd.

Thanks

I have not looked at the TF front bumper in person but judging by the pictures I would say no to adding fog lights. I mean you "can" but I think it would look like shit and they would need to be mounted higher up in the bumper than you would want.

I would call Lucky 8 they might have a solution for you.

Nice looking bumper, thanks for the link as I am also in the market for a new front bumper as mine has deteriorated due to snow drifts.

I have a TerraFirma front bumper and love it. I wish I would have cut some holes for fog lights before I re-powder coated it (scratched by the shipping company). I was stuck on keeping fogs in the bumper for a while till I realized that the TF bumper was nice and slim (but not too slim) and had good recovery points, and was the best price. I put some better bulbs in the headlights, and I have the hellas on the roof if I need them.
Here is one pic. Great clearance, great price, just have to trim the bottom of the grill a bit. Mount very sturdy to the frame.
If you wanted to add fogs you could cut holes in the face of the bumper and use metal panel bond adhesive to add mounting tabs to the backside of the bumper.

Here's a couple more pics.

P.S. if you still have the stock rear bumper, you can trim it and the quarters like the attached pic. Make more clearance and looks better with the front TF being so much higher than stock.

And yes, I threw a D-Web sticker on the truck for the Uwharrie Rover Event last year.

looked at tactical rovers but super pricey. I can get an ARB for less. I know clearance isnt as good but i had one on my previous disco and it went everywhere i wanted it to. I would like one without the brushgaurd and a bit slimmer. Thats why i thought the terra firma might work.

Mike97d1 thanks for the pics. just reinforces that I like the bumper.

I am basically looking at 3 bumpers

ARB
caseycustoms
and terra firma.

decisions decisions.

Then there is the question of rear bumper. I had the greg davis on the previous disco. It was awesome with great clearance but this disco is not for hard wheeling just fun times. my 92 4runner is for beating on.

opinions on rear bumpers. again keeping budget in mind

thanks

Just get the TerraFirma, I was in the exact same mindset before I got mine, and I'm happy with it. There are some really nice bumpers out there, but they are way more money. Call up Justin at Lucky8.

As far as the rear, I have been talking to a fab shop locally about possibly building a rear that would be similar to the TerraFirma front. If we work something out I was going to have 8 - 10 made after I test the prototype.

The CaseyCustoms bumper without the brush guard looks good, but Ive never heard of him before. Maybe get some upclose pictures of the welds and mounting. The TF would be a good option. The ARB is overpriced for what it is.

The TerraFirma bumper looks good, it's tucked in close, and it only weighs 81.5 pounds.

If one were to use a very lightweight winch, the entire combination could weigh as little as 135 pounds. That's a pretty sweet figure, especially when it's drawn back toward the front axle like that. It's pretty cool.

The Tactical Rovers bumper is a good weight, as well. I asked them for the figure. The model on their website features a full brush bar and weighs 105 pounds. It looks like it's a nice bumper, and the brush bar will account for a good portion of that extra heft.

I haven't used either, but on paper they both seem nice and well-suited for their intended purposes.

I've designed a front bumper as well, mainly for myself. Various parts and coatings have been tested already. I planned on cranking out ten of them to offer for sale after mine is finished, but then I realized this is a Land Rover community.

Staring at a rack full of bumpers you tight-wads won't buy is the last thing I need.:D

Cheers,

Kennith

Unless things have changed I'd say screw the fog lights and get an RTE. I've only dragged mine one time and that was about going off a cliff in Nevada. The ARB I used to have dragged all the time. It's all about drag not fog lights. Unless you're a poser.

I guess I am a poser. I bought it because I missed my old disco that I wheeled all over the place. I dont plan on any hard wheeling in this one. I want the fog lights to remain since to me that is part of the draw of the 03 04 disco.

Apparently i confused tactical rovers with another company. The tactical rovers bumper does not meet my fog light requirement.

If I was building a trail rig it would be the greg davis rear and rte/tactical rovers front but I am not. I am building a better version of my disco to enjoy and do some light wheeling. Aesthetics trump functionality. Pricing so far works out to about the same on all of them except the terra firma is a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the input.

I agree, and disagree. I agree with the fact that the fog lights are not super important, but everyone is different. I disagree with the RTE option. The RTE is obviously a great bumper, but it is way to slim for a lot of trucks that are not a full-on trail rigs. They just look weird to me on a lot of trucks. That being said, I think you'd be hard pressed to drag the Terra Firma or some of the others, unless you were doing some very, very crazy stuff.

So for a mild rig like mine, or the one that the post was about, I think looks do play a factor. If that makes us posers than that's fine. But lets face it, if we were all building off road only beasts, then a lot of people would call us posers for starting with a Land Rover. There is nothing wrong with wanting your truck to look good and function.

Loydster, where do you live? Maybe seeing the bumper in person and seeing what i was talking about with adding the fog lights would help you decide.
