Removed the front driveshaft (going to have a new DC one built)and my D1 no longer moves. The rear won't engage. Thought I could still drive it until the new drive shaft was built. Appears the drive line requires both front and rear drive shafts to run, is this correct.
Thanks

Thanks you the info. Was not planning on driving it, just wanted to move it from the middle of my driveway. Not easy to push, have tried (up driveway). Locked it up and still did not move (tried low and high), the front driveshaft flang moves, but no movement to the rear. I think It has a D1 (1998)complex and want to stay in the middle of the driveway until it gets it's it new driveshaft.

Not to be insulting but are you sure you are locking the CDL by moving the hi low shifter over to the left until it locks? If you are and you have the locked light on the dash and you still aren't moving then you have a blown rear diff or broken rear axle.

Yep...what Fly said.

Do you have an owner's manual? It will show you the procedure for "locking" the CDL. If it hasn't been used in years (or ever), it may not want to move to the left. Do a search for frozen CDL. There is plenty of information. Whatever you do, DON'T try to force it. Trust me, I've been there:banghead:

Oh yeah...welcome to the board (and learn how to search first!!!).

The shifter does move to the left, it moves to all four positions. You are right, I have never locked the diff. I figured it was like other 4x4 I have had and will lock when in neutral and moving the shifter. Read about other with same problem, it souds like it will engage better when moving slowly. Once I have the new front driveshaft installed I will try it while moving to see if it works.

Thank again.

FWIW - my brother's D1 shifter appears to work fine - moves in every direction, and the sector shaft moves on the t-case when the shifter is moved to the left.
And yet the diff lock is not engaging.

Vee,

Don't let them get you down. We all have to learn at some point, as noted above.

It'd be nice if folks wouldn't act like they were born knowing everything (yawns)

Sounds like the classic stuck diff lock shifter syndrome!

With the driveshaft out, it's easy to use a 13 m/m ratcheting end wrench to remove the shift lever, then use a 10 m/m open-end wrench to shift the diff lock, then, Bob's your uncle and you can move the vehicle.

If inclined, once you get the truck moved, you can investigate why the shifter doesn't work.
