A friend has asked me for advice regarding her '96 DI 4.0 SE7 with 177k miles. Tan leather, rear air.

The good:
- New Brake Master Cylender
- New Left Rear Pads (yes, just 1 corner)
- Newish Plugs and wires
- Newish hoses
- No frame rust
- Sunroofs haven't been used in a few years, and do NOT leak

The bad:
- Brake pedal 'still' goes to the floor and barely stops the vehicle (was ok after MC change, now bad again)
- Normal oil coated underside
- Rotoflex is cracked
- Single tick in the top of the engine, follows RPM, cold and warm. Been there for ~10k
- Key Fob broken

The ugly:
- Left side body damage, some poorly bondo'd and never painted
- Fairly dirty interior. Seats OK except for Drivers which is cracked and has a hole or two.

So, it sounds like a good Project vehicle, or trail truck , or an ok driver with a couple (few) fixes.

It is For Sale, and she wants ~$2500 for it. Is that too much? What is it *REALLY* worth?

It needs to be sold in a week. Location: NOVA (Leesburg, VA)

Thoughts? Interest? Offers? Estimates?

I've thought about buying it for a Truggy project, but don't really have the cash. What is a good price for a project / truggy? Is this a good candidate?

What would YOU pay for this truck?

I wouldn't go past the 2k mark for it. However, it seems like a good project rig. By the looks, that bondo'd (?) panel is just one, so easy to fix....under two k just rings the bell for me....$1950 and it would be sold :) IMHO

I'd trade a case of cheap beer for it, but that's only because I like the color.

sorry, but this is a $500 parts truck

the "ugly", the "bad", and the "good", plus the Check Engine Light, ABS light, and Service Engine Soon light just kill this thing.

you could part it out and get a few K, but what's your labor worth? do you have a shop in which to part it out? what are you going to do with all the leftover junk that no one wants?

It runs so even I would give more than $500 for it-LOL. If it's complete and "Running" it is probably worth $1000.

Be careful of suggesting someone should buy a truck to part out, certain folks around here get all upset over unlicensed junkyards!

I think this is yet another instance of the plummeting value of these vehicles. My roommate in PDX just sold his pristine '93 LWB to the only person who responded to the ad. In spite of his having paid more than $3500 in the last two months on repairs to a beautiful truck, he was only able to get $3000 for it with 140K on the clock, coil onversion, new blower motor/resistor, new starter, fuel pump, etc.

Well sure, because you have a shop and the knowledge and the time and the desire. You can see some added value in it. All I see is one of the saddest looking D1's I've ever laid eyes on. The "New Left Rear Pads (yes, just 1 corner)" in the "good" column says volumes about the TLC this poor truck has received during it's life.

[No offense at all intended, nrene. But you started this thread and you asked....]

It does run, and has been a DD for 13 years. With the recent brake issues, she finally gave up and got a Scion (~38 MPG).

I'm just torn because I don't have the cash, and don't *need* a project given what I already have in the garage... but it'd be cool to actually have a truck where I'd worry more about making it through an obsticle instead of avoiding body damage (SIIa and DII) or breakage (DII).

No offense taken at all.

I asked her how much oil she adds and at what frequency (it's a leaker)... she talked about 'regular oil changes' as opposed to 'adding' oil.

You are very correct, it's been maintained (that's a stretch of the word) on a shoe-string....

If I bought it, it'd go through a complete rebuild... into some sort of something... to give it a second life as something fun.

Perhaps. I don't really have the interest in being an active parts reseller as the labor input is too great, but I do see a benefit to having a source for those goofy little parts that break all the time and take forever to order in and pay stupid shipping on.

To be honest, as I said recently when I got bashed for it, I buy parts trucks so that I can have those goofy little parts and spares for my fleet. With this truck, I see a pair of CVs, calipers, another spare transmission and transfer case and maybe an engine. The rest of it would just sit out behind the barn until I either needed something or SWMBO demanded another scrap iron run. I do not need any more interior panels, nor glass!

I'm really surprised that more of the active folks around here don't have a parts truck.

As for its condition, my first two parts trucks were much worse. One was a double fatal crash and the other an arson victim (The Disco Inferno!). The engine from the crashed truck is in my LWB, the transmission and t-case from the Disco Inferno are in my trail rig.

I hope I'm not giving away any secrets here, but I usually figure I can sell enough without too much difficulty to offset the majority of the cost and then, I can afford to pick it clean as needed.
