Fuel pump?

I have a '95 Range Rover County (Classic) with a stock 3.9. And it's been a very long time since I had to troubleshoot mechanical issues. So I'm warning you now that my questions may seem pretty basic....

Is the fuel pump mechanical or electrical? The reason I ask is because last night I parked it on a hill, with the front facing uphill (I do this a lot BTW and no real issues until this morning). This morning it cranks over but doesn't start. Try a number of times, and finally end up taking the pickup to work. This afternoon I try again. And again. I finally decide to turn it around and point it downhill. A couple cranks later it fires right up. So the obvious conclusion (at least to me) is that the fuel pump isn't doing it's job. But I am very open to other thoughts and troubleshooting ideas.

More data: Recently I had it in for maintenance. They rebuild the "advance" (It's been a little while, and can get the invoice if you need to know exactly what that means) as it was all sorts of messed up (my words, not theirs). Ever since it's been idling rough at times, and even threatening to stall. I attributed it to the advance issue and was planning to have it addressed next visit. But in light of what happened this morning I suspect this may have been the beginnings of the fuel pump deterioration. Is that a bad assumption?

Anyway, here's a novel just to ask if my fuel pump is broke. Thanks for reading.

Hell if it starts when pointed in the direction where the gas is flowing into the line, The pump's prob. bad. But it could be something else, I doubt the advance would be the problem however

The fuel pump is electric, to get to it you'll have to get to the access, it's located behind the rear seat in the middle under the carpet. The entire assembly comes up as one unit, fuel pump is located in that unit. It's fairly easy to replace, and straight forward. As for the part, I believe you can use a 89 Cadillac Seville fuel pump , GM # 462-23, or Borg warner p39 ($70 @ pepboys)

Also just visually inspect the entire pump / floater assembly to see if you have anything iffy. I think the connections on the top of a quite a few go bad too, which is just a wire repair and you're on your way

Were you extremely low on fuel? maybe the fuel pickup coudn't get enough fuel when pointed uphill.

If you turn the key to 'run' , can you hear the fuel pump running? you might want someone else to turn the key while you stand along side the truck near the back, you should hear it as it primes the system (3-4 seconds, if I remember right). You can also have them crank it and see if you can hear it.

fuel filter changed recently?

I'm not sure what they did on the repairs, distributor advance I assume. Did they adjust the timing?

Lucky for you, the 95's have the hatch to replace the fuel pump. Older RRs have to drop the tank to get to it (or cut a hole in the load bay).

I thought my pump was dead but I just tested it and it was 32-33psi. How low can you go before you have a problem?
