Fuel Tank Replaced Today: Report

I got my letter last week, and called LR of Seattle to schedule an appt. They said they would "squeeze me in" if I came at 7:30 am this morning (4/12/05). I arrived at about 7:05, filled out some paperwork, and went to breakfast. Took a walking tour of South Lake Union, and came back at 11:15. They were just getting it on the rack  . Apparently they have been swamped with this recall, and one of the biggest problems has been in draining out the fuel from the old tanks! 1) they were running out of room to store the fuel, and 2) the little fuel lines they were using to drain the tanks were taking forever. One guy today had come in with his tank full (mine was about 1/4).

Anyway I took another walk, rode the Monorail downtown, bought some shoes, had lunch, and went back at 2:30. They were washing my truck, everything was done, the service reps were very nice and very appreciative of my good nature about the 2hr job taking 7+ hrs. I mentioned that I thought that paying for a fuel tank replacement would run $1000usd, and he agreed, saying maybe $1200. For that I can wait a little.

The dumpster behind the shop was literally overflowing with dead fuel tanks. One of the guys said they were doing 10 that day.

I had been noticing a gas smell at the exhaust recently, but I took my truck in for it's emission test last week and it passed with flying colors, so I'm almost positive that I have been leaking at least fumes from the old tank. Anyway I'm glad to have it done.

No that was part of the problem. They drained the fuel into whatever they use, and they were full, and they were looking around for 55 gal drums or something to store the fuel in so they could empty more tanks....

My SA was named Christian. I don't recall any Scotts, but these guys were quite friendly, especially since they kind of knew that this was the only time they would see me....

Hmm..thats weird...they put the fuel that was in my tank into the new one...i dont know exactly how thay did it (wether or not they removed the old tank with the fuel still in it, then drain into the new tank or if there was a third party tank or drum involved) but when i got my car back i had the exact 1/4th tank i had before......the Filter question...sorry to say that no, they did not. On the invoice the only two things that appear (with a "N/C" next to it of course) are a Tank and a Grommet.

I had my 95's tank replaced. The dealer told me to drain it to below 1/4 of a tank. I dutifully did before takig it in. Got it back with the same amount of fuel(ish).

PS They do NOT replace the fuel filter.

I brought mine in with less than 1/4 tank. New tank was filled almost to 1/2. Good deal! :D

Damn lucky! I took mine in on fumes and got it back with even less!

Getting mine replaced this week (if I remember correctly) and getting pump replaced as well. 140k on old one, its time!
Or is that on borrowed time?

BTW, my 96 should be in for the recall tomorrow - my efforts to burn off gas failed, so I still have about half a tank. Any easy way to siphon some of it out?

I had pretty terrible luck with the siphon hoses softening and getting jammed up in the little latch in the filler hole or elsewhere. I was thinking of using something more hard-walled than this hose.

Hey, I must have missed the initial posting on this topic. Is the recall for both D1 & D2? Would the dealer confirm if my rig is part of the recall? Thanks.

I had mine replaced before the official recall was even out. The dealer (Centerville, Utah) said that as long as I complained they would do it, regardless of whether I got a letter in the mail or not. They replaced it, but said that the "vent hose" was damaged and it ended up costing me $100. They only charged me for the part because the labor was pretty much part of the recall. I brought it in on fumes, got it back on fumes, they said it would take 2 hrs, my wife waited 4 1/2 until it was done!
