Gearbox fault plus codes

Okay, truck is 2000 P38 with 88K on the odometer. Truck just recently finished a 3500 mile road trip.

SES light comes on and I pull the following:

P0174
P0171
P1702

A day o two later the dash computer gives me a "Gearbox fault". Truck still driving relatively normal and I had other issues, so I left it alone for a few days. When we got back in it she would start just fine, dash code would remain, and then a mile or two down the road she would stall. This happened a few times before I just parked the truck.

Advice and behavior led me to thinking it was a bad MAF, so I replaced that and cleared the SES. The first time I fired the truck up after replacing the MAF (and ensuring the battery was good) she fired fine and I let her warm up, at this point no "Gearbox Fault" code.

When I hopped in to spin her around the block I put my foot on the brake to put her into gear and heard a click, like it was down on the passenger side of the tranny tunnel. I tapped the brake a few times and the fault came back on the dash, and then each time I pressed the brake the lights in the vehicle would flicker (all of them inside the vehicle.) One more pres on the pedal and then vehicle stalled out.

I'm open for suggestions. This week has been shitty for me and my Rovers ... every single one of them has thrown me a curve ball so if I could get one up and running great I'd be happy.

hmmm. I had a friend with a 2000 who had a crazy issue somewhat similar. he would press the brakes and it actually maniuplated the EAS to go up. He kept doing this (and yes, I saw it with my own eyes) instead of properly fixing or swapping out to coils until one fine day, a piston on the rear caliper smashed through the brake pad, EAS simultaneously deflated and brake fluid ran out from every possible brake orifice. IN addition, when he presses the brake, he hears air going POOF from the pedal and all his lights do what you describe. . . hopefully someone can give you a good answer. - elias

btw - it also had an MAF issue prior to this. . . its still sitting in his garage. i think he's going to part it out!!!

Sounds like a battery. I wouldn't even fool with testing it, drop the $100 on a battery. I burned up my EAS controller with a battery that tested good but was really bad.

Okay PT ... what if I told you I started the truck to move it this evening and now in addition to what was previously posted, I now have ABS and Traction faults on dash computer.

Does this sound more and more like a BeCM or battery?

Determining a BeCM failure is as much an art as a science. They do not give us clear indications that they have either suffered a logic failure or an I/O failure.

As a result, one must rely upon the preponderance of evidence to make the determination.

Let's get the battery charged fully before we make any rash decisions. It may well be merely a weak or dying battery causing computer issues.
