GearBox Fault???

This is for a family member in Chicago; he is experiencing this error code very sporadically. Twice in fact, he has gotten this code and the '98 RR goes into 'limp mode' and the RPMs would not go over 2500. If he shuts down the engine and restarts, the code goes away and he is able to drive normally.
I've read a few -the ones I found- postings and they suggest it may be the battery....could it be as simple as that?
After the first time it happened, he changed the ATF and Filter thinking that was the cause. It happened a second time after the fluid change. Any suggestions?
He is about to take a looong trip -chicago to san francisco- in the next few days would it be wise to just replace the battery and drive his rr all the way here to Northern Cal?
Please help me help him.

Most common cause of this fault is a faulty gear selector switch on the side of the tranny. Could also be a result of soda pop in the shifter/centre switch pack.

Less often, battery/alternator-those tend to cause t-case faults.

ok, I'll suggest an inspection of the gear selector switch and a good cleaning of the tranny area.
anyone else...any other things that need to be checked?

I had both, bad battery AND bad xyz switch. the switch can be cleaned if you get it before it's too late, I have some pics here:

they symptoms were different though. The "gearbox fault" was from the battery, the display going weird, then not working at all was the switch.
