I'm trying to find a good alternative because new GEMS MAFs are crazy expensive.

I've tried a "cheap" ($180 relative to $1300) Allmakes MAF and it worked but caused hesitation. Anyone know if the ECU has to slowly adapt to a new MAF?

It seems that most hot wire (as opposed to hot film) type MAFs work the same. They have 3 pins (ground, 12v+, and signal) and output a voltage. So to find a compatible MAF we just have to find one with the correct type, diameter, and connector. With more work a connector can be adapted so that requirement disappears. Another option is to find a bare sensor that could be inserted into the stock housing.

An example of a candidate replacement MAF is the 02-05 Freelander MAF. I noticed the connector looks exactly same. Assuming it's a hot wire type and an adaptor can be made to compensate for its shorter length, or maybe inserted into the stock housing, it might work. There are countless other candidates out there from many manufacturers, so surely one or more must work.

Am I missing something? It seems too easy or someone would have done it by now.
