Got the new sound system

Finally after 5 weekends the new stereo is in. This is my very first install, so it's not super clean (no fiberglass or anything), but it turned out to be pretty good. I think for the large Disco cabin, this combination works very well. The sub box that I've built weights at 131 lbs... do you think I'll need new springs in the back? :p Unfortunately, overall there's about 180 lbs worth of extra weight now with all the components, oh well...

I've rewired the entire system with Stinger wires: 12G for all speaker components, 0G and 4G for the power. All wires run through existing holes and rubber grommets, likely there are penty of those in the truck! Taking panels and carpet off was a pain in the rear, but it worked out alright.

I bought an LR repair manual on DVD off of eBay and it proved to be invaluable in helping me figure out how to take the interior apart and put it back together.

Check out some pics and component descriptions on the link below (page 4)

They are not very practical for off-roading, but those RR 19s look awesome! I've always loved the Bonatti Grey too. I give your rig a 10.

I cracked up when I saw pictures of your woman on the page marked "Toys and Pics".

What model Alpine head unit is this? Do you have the LR factory changer and if so, does it work with that head unit?

I am looking for a good Alpine head unit that will play MP3s and will work with the changer that came stock in my 2000 Disco II. I know there have been numerous threads about this, but I wanted to hear from someone that has actually done it.

It's a CDA-9833

Hey all -

1) Head unit is an Alpine CDA-9833. I don't have a changer, but I'm assuming that it will work with the factory one: the factory unit that I removed was made by Alpine as well, so I'm sure they are compatible. www.autotoys.com sells two different wiring harnesses and a dash "kit" for the Disco. If you are just changing the head unit and keeping stock wiring those harnesses will work for you. If not, you can always hardwire the system.

Alpine will fit perfect in the dash, as it's a standard DIN size. I'd reccomend Alpine because it has this swivel face plate that goes along the lines of the curved dash.

2) I chose to put the crossover on the door panel because a) it wouldn't fit inside the door - too thick, b) I want to have access to it, should I choose to change the crossover settings, c) there really isn't any other place to put them. Front ones fit nicely inside the door packet, rear ones are right out of the way of the passenger... worked out OK.

okok...lets not work this guy over like the dude with the headlight swap a few weeks ago. The man's just playing with his gadgets.

that said, the phrase "smash and grab" comes to mind....

Why not? ;)

The crossovers have to go. There are plenty of places to hide them. How often do you really need to adjust them?

And the umbilical coming off the sub is not good for the cable or the looks. Is the sub attached or just sitting in the loading area?

Other than that, I sure hope it sounds good

Agreed...if you don't have anything nice to say then shut it. This is not the place to flame ppls setups. He put the damn crossovers/"umbilical"/subs/wheels there because that's where he wanted it them.

I get no love here at all, huh? :D It's all good though!

Yeah, like I said, the install is not all that clean - my first one!!! The power cords on the sub will get hidden a little more, I just didn't want to cut the carpet. I'm assuming the crossovers you guys complaning about are the ones in the rear doors? Yeah, well, it looks kinda cool to me (to each their own...), the green is a little wacky, but heck, they are made to stand out!

Box isn't bolted down, I'm still working on figuring out the best way to do that... I've got 4% tint plus I'm putting the rear cargo cover back, so there's no way to see the install from outside, but yeah, I agree with Utaw... alarm is next.

... but he posted the photos and asked for comments, right? So what's wrong with Koby, Quinlan, and Cooper to offer it?

My $0.02: It is unrealistic to expect outstanding sound quality in a Disco, so why bother...
CD changers go berserk on washboard; the 128k MP3 quality is sufficient. Therefore, no need in fancy shmancy Alpine unit; the cheapest MP3 player, together with a quality amp, would do just fine.
Oh yeah, the crossover has to go under. Same for the amp and wiring.

I would love to have a bit better stereo, but if I did that where would the fridge, tools, dogs and hi-lift go?

I like the MP3 player idea. P M do you have one that you can suggest? How about speakers that fit a D1? I know, I know, I will go search...

What possible value could this board serve if people only ever said 'nice' things about each others projects? He put the crossovers on the doors because he thought they looked cool - he didn't notice that they look like my kid super glued Buzz Lightyear's back pack to an otherwise classy looking door. It's only fair to let him know that. The sub, if not bolted down, will sooner or later detach it's self from the rest of the system, maybe even kill somebody. Was that a flame? How about you be a 'Silent Z' and shut the fuck up if all you can offer is "I give your rig a 10".

Brian,

my only experience with car MP3 player is the Sony unit that sits under the seat in my '68 Wagoneer. I didn't want to screw the stock dash to put a DIN player in, and I didn't want to fiddle with a CD under the seat every 45 minutes or so. Therefore, MP3.
The one I have was a $200 discontinued model. With 45W RMS per channel, I don't think I'll ever need more, neither I'll need an amplifier. I bought it about a year and half ago, now you can get an in-dash MP3 unit for $120 or so. Just look in the back - the numbers manufacturers quote for RMS power are rarely supported by the size of the heat sink in the back.
