GPS installation

Hi All. I have a basic 5 seat 2004 Disco that I want to install a GPS unit. As I don't have any sunroof controls, the roof console has a blank that looks like it might be the perfect size for GPS screen. Has anyone tried installing a unit here, and is there a trick to removing the blank? I've already got a GPS aerial fixed to the top of my snorkel and I don't think it would be too hard to run the aerial lead up the A-pillar and into the ceiling. Could I also use the sunroof power (or any other power source in the roof cavity) that is currently not used, but the cabling is there?

Thanks,

Swifty.

I would think that is too high to look at for your GPS. I have mine on the left side of the windshield.

Yeah, I'd reconsider the location. That's going to be hard to use looking up like that. Depends on how you want to use it I guess.

I went with an integrated head unit. very happy with my AVIC N3. DVD, ipod, etc... can get them at reasonable price used these days... I did a self-install took some time but worth saving the $$.

good luck.

I have Canada Topo loaded on my Garmin 76Cx. Personally, I think it's the ultimate setup. Works in the car, including being capable of doing routing. It's a handheld, so I can use it for hiking, etc. I have a Touratech mount for my WR250 and I use it for enduros. And, you can load marine maps if you want to use it boating. It's waterproof and unlike the 60Cx, it floats!

All that and a bag of nuts.

I thought about doing this sort of thing.

I was going to follow this thread on moving the interior light.
http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showpost.php?p=189490&postcount=27

Then I was going to mount the GPS where the light used to be, that way it wouldn't seem so high.

This idea fell through after I didnt end up moving to a new area. I waas going to get a GPS for the new city so I wouldnt get lost. But we never moved.

Let me know how it works.

Thanks, that link was interesting. I've had to postpone this project as work has intervened, but I hope to get back to it soon.
