I?m now using my Discovery as my daily driver. That means outfitting the Discovery all over again? GPS, Satellite Radio, MP3 Player, etc?.

My question is:
Can I place this RAM Mount for my GPS in this location without doing any major harm? Like drilling into HVAC ducts. I was thinking some self tapping screws in the base of the mount. I know it will leave some ugly holes when removed but not too worried about that.

Anyone have any other mounting suggestions, other than suction cup glass mount?
Garmin Model 60CS GPS and Ram Mount.

Thanks,

dd

If you are worried about aesthetics, the suction cups are fabulous on the lighter GPSes such as the 60 (I have one for my bike/hiking)...I did use self tapping screws on the inside of my Disco, but that's not my daily driver...

Is there any particular reason you're not into the suction cup mount? I suction cup mounted my new Garmin Nuvi 200W almost perfectly level with my dash and the results are great. I took it off-road yesterday and it didn't even budge. In fact the suction cup has been in the same place since Christmas and hasn't come loose.

Maybe use a short screw with a coarse thread or drill some holes and use plastic rivets? I think the rivets would be the better course of action.

I agree with you here, and will probably mount my Ram mount in the exact same place. Have you figured out how to get power to it yet?

I use the Ram suction cup mount with a Garmin 2610. I have it mounted low on the windshield just to the right of the gauge cluster/speedometer. It is solid, doesn't vibrate and is in a good position to see the unit while driving.

I haven?t had much luck with the suction cup mounts. I have one of the older style RAM suction cups that were about 4.5 inches in diameter. Looking at there website, it appears that RAM is now making a different style of window mount with a smaller suction cup ? maybe works better than previous models.

For power I will cut the cigarette lighter plug off the end of the power lead and run it to a power source switched on/off with the ignition somewhere below the steering column. I?m hoping that the satellite reception will be OK in this position so I don?t have to run an external antenna.

As for mounting to the dash ? I had not thought of plastic rivets or maybe plastic sleeve anchors. I?ll have to mull this over with a few cold ones.

Thanks.

I put mine down to the right of the transmission tunnel - i.e. screwed into the plastic that makes up the centre console - right where the hot air vent comes out - then the unit fits nicely between the passengers knee, ash tray and glove box - a bit more Out Of Sight.... and the sun doesn't blind it...

I placed my ram mount next to my right knee, where the center console cover ends. I used a flexoble mount, and I have positoned it so that the gps is upright and just covers the blank next to the cruise control button. This works wekk because there is a straight shot to the windshield and I can view it while driving. Let me know if you would like to see a pic.
