My mehanic explained to me that there is nipples on the drive shaft that need to be greased with ball bearing grease? He said it needs to be done with every oil change. Yall let me know what you think and how I do it. Thanks!

Every oil change, or after wading/wallowing in mud. If you don't grease them, you might as well replace them now with ones that don't require greasing.

I just did mine this past weekend. I picked up some synthetic mobil 1 tubes, just because. It was quite easy, just pump until new grease comes out.

Is this really nessesary to do every oil change?
Or can it be like once a year thing?

For the cost (practically nothing) and the time it takes to do (less than half an hour), it's good piece of mind and a wise maintenance choice any way you look at it. Now go get dirty! ;)

The thing with greaseable u-joints that many don't consider is actually greasing them. People think "Oh, great, greasable u-joints, they'll last longer." But that's only if you actually grease them. Good intentions are worthless. If you're is the kind of person with good intentions, but who won't actually crawl under there and do it, then forgert greaseable, and install sealed ones. They will last longer. Same with tie rod ends.

Greasing them at oil change is a good way to remember. Back when filling stations were Service Stations, the bay was labeled Lubrication, not Oil Change. A lube job was changing the oil, greasing everything, changing the air cleaner oil, the whole 9 yards.

For grease I use Castrol Heavy Duty Pyroplex Blue. Everyone has their preference though.

Does this apply to the Disco I only? It appears that the nipples are already there...

I'm under the impresion that you have to screw in the nipples on the driveshaft in order to grease the Disco2... Is that right? If so, what size nipples?

On a DII (correct me if I am wrong, I no longer have my original front DS) the front DS has one greasable U joint on the front of the shaft but the Double Carden joint (2 U joints close together near the transfer case) are not greasable. These are the joints that usually fail and send the DS slamming into the cats, ******, and transfer case. These get so hot from being next to the cats that the grease dries up, and whammo.
The rear drive shaft has one u joint near the transfer case which is serviceable and the rotoflex in the back which is rubber. Both driveshafts also have serviceable shafts, you will see a grease nipple on the shaft. Hit that too.

I replaced my front DS with a GBR HD shaft. It has larger Us than LR uses and all 3 are serviceable. Quality product, possibly the best upgrade I have done.

Just installed a Rockware off-set tie rod and changed out one of the tie rod ends. What part of the tie rod (ball Joint) need to be greased?
Thanks,
Ed

I think I used about half a tube. But they are so cheap that I usually keep a couple of extra laying around just in case friends come over and we wanna have a greasing party. :p
