Be sure to get the warranty, you'll be needing it.
From what I've found on other forums is they they'll jerk you around until the warranty expires then decline it because the warranty has expired.

I just got an X9 on amazon for $500. I bought a Harbor winch in a bind one weekend. It blew up on the second pull. I returned it the next week. Keep searching. Warn has a discount website with good deals too.

A local guy has returned his twice (that I know of) with no probs. More a PITA having to take the damn thing back every 6mos it seems like. Especially when deals like this on web can be found.

There was a fellow advertising his winches here many years ago - their current website is http://titanwinches.com/ .
Back then HF didn't sell winches - now they do, and they look pretty similar. I don't know what is different; I bought a 12K Titan winch then, and only got to use it once.
I've also seen photos of planetary gears of cheap and expensive winches in a russian off-road magazine - there you definitely see the difference. I'd say if I treat my winch as a 6k unit, most likely, it'll be okay.

One purchases a winch to recover or mobilize his vehicle in worst case scenarios.

It is not sensible to purchase a cheap privately labeled model. These are produced in vast quantities and varying quality, and simply fitted with a sticker and a box by the purchasing organization.

I could order winches from China tomorrow and brand them in whatever manner I choose. It is no more complicated than a few telephone calls. These companies aren't designing the winches and commissioning their manufacture. They are essentially buying out of a Chinese catalog.

Brands such as Warn and Superwinch have long supplied the most demanding users, and when you become stuck in an inaccessible location, or simply cannot traverse an obstacle, you immediately become a demanding user.

You'll only need your winch when nothing else will suffice. At that point, it cannot fail.

Beyond that, it's simply a decoration, and that's a problem. Decorations have a nasty habit of failing when they are asked to do their job after a few months of sitting idle.

The day you find that it has failed is the very day you most need it to function.

Don't cheap out. If you cannot afford a good winch, wait and save money until you can.

A winch is not a toy. It is meant to save you from your toys. It is also incredibly dangerous; likely the most dangerous machine many people operate.

Buy something you can trust, that doesn't require asking everyone if it can be trusted in order to reach that conclusion.

I have seen all winch brands fail at one point or another. Including expensive Warns and higher end ones from Superwinch. It is always a gamble with winches.

The only winch I have seen capable of heavy use without fail is the Warn 8274.

Thanks for the feedback and opinions. I will pass on the HF winch until I can afford something better, the Superwinch on Amazon is a good option.

I'm going to have a front bumper made, I was hoping to have the winch available while the bumper is being built. I will hold off until I can afford the bumper and a good winch.

I've never seen a Milemarker hydraulic winch fail.

Oops. I forgot to mention those.

Of course, hydraulic winches are different machines entirely. You've almost got to go out of your way to build one that won't turn after enough kicking.

On occasion I attend a local auction that sells merchandise returns for different retailers. About a year ago they bought a semi full (40 full pallets) of Harbor Freight warranty returns- there was at LEAST one of those fucking winches in every pallet.
