Harmonic Balancer

I am helping my sister out by replacing her harmonic balancer on her 1998 Mazda Millenia, auto trans. I know that on a Disco you can remove the bell housing maint. plate and put a pry bar in the gears to keep the shaft from spinning when trying to loosen the mounting bolt for the balancer.

However, I've never messed with such a short-statured vehicle, and I don't have a lift readily accessible. Any suggestions on how to stabilize this damn thing so I can fix her car and get on with my life?

Any and all help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I will likely get flammed for this, but when I did my daughter's Jeep, I put a long breaker bar on it and rested it against the frame.

I bumped the starter just a bit, and presto..It was loose.

Rough, I know, but I was not at all in the mood to fuck with it at the time.

I have done the same that Dan mentioned in my FJ60. Just make sure you disconnect the ignition components so the engine will not start and you should be fine. It only takes the initial spin to get it loose.

Good luck,

It's an automatic :banghead:. I already tried to bump the starter with a pry bar wedged against the frame...that damn thing is going nowhere. I'm at a loss here...tried it in both forward and reverse gears.
