Guys, I need your input... As you may know, I totaled my '04 disco. So now, I'm in the market for a new rover. Here's my dilemma. I got 12k, maybe a little more, to spend. I can either buy a RR Classic and put the rest of the money into add-ons and getting it in mechanically great shape.--or-- I can buy another '04 DII and put my lift/tires back on it, and continue the upgrades as I go along. Any advice? BTW, this is a DD/weekend offroader.

Oh my God. $12K to build a truck with?

Find the nicest RRC in the country, MAYBE spend $5K.

Caster-corrected front arms, bent trailing arms, nice new shocks, nice new springs, nice new tires, bumper/winch and you'd STILL have enough left for a kick-ass stereo and take SWMBO out to a nice dinner.

You, my friend, have a high class problem indeed!

x2. Remember, that D2 will just depreciate. The rrc probably won't much more. Seriously, go for it!

94 or 95 RRC LWB gets my vote. 4.2 is a good engine with plenty of power over the 3.9 in the SWB. Plus, if you don't have kids already, once you do, you will appreciate the extra room in the LWB. Even without kids you can put a lot more stuff inside the truck and keep your COG low by keeping stuff off the roof.

Add:
3" lift and the goodies that go with it
LT230 and DII front drive shaft
285/75R16's on stock rims or spare steelies
slider
front and rear bumper

Good to go with plenty of money left over for beer and an ARB fridge.

I drive a RRC so my opinion is a bit slanted on this one, but you can build one hell of a nice classic for less than 12k. I'd say go for it you'll have plenty left over in a maintenance fund and beer money while your working.

Engine wise every combination is available for either the RRC or DI/DII. By that I mean you can swap what you want into what you have.

Cargo room is much better on a DI/DII. I have both a RRC and DI. When camping the DI is more convenient with the big back door. The RRC rear cargo is your standard SUV. LWB is the exception but it does feel like a bus.

Later RRC seats are superior to Disco seats.

In terms of 'classic', both the RRI and DiscoI fit the definition.

Both will retain value when the price drops to $5K or less. Try finding a good 4WD under the $2.5K range that doesn't need significant work.

Yes, I can see your confusion. Wanting new but thinking used ;)
I hear the prez needs some help after his crappy week so buy new, stimulate the economy, create new job, bla-bla -bla.,

Honestly though, sorry to hear about your 04. Whichever choice you go for will always be the right one.

Ok, so...

If you want to have an off roader, buy one already built. It'll save you time and cash.

A D2 off roader is REALLY NICE if you are just gonna bum around on the easy trails. Very comfortable and womenfolk friendly.

Pretty much the same for D1s and RRCs.

If you want a Defender, I've heard amazing stories of importing really nice trucks from Europe. Key is to find one that someone has put their heart and soul into...AKA a new chassis and a 300 TDI. The can be mighty cheap. I've heard you can get out for under $7k...bottom line.

Personally, I'd be looking for a built, used D2. Then all you gotta do is kept it doing, maybe put synthetic winch line on and your junk in the back.
