FWIW, i had a local shop paint mine w/ Glasurit Trim Black, cost me $75 and came with a warranty...at that price, it wasn't worth my time futzing with it...

The vinyl is not as flat as a really good flat paint and that makes a huge difference. If I had to do it again and it was $75, I might do that, but if you take your time to sand, prime and paint, it will last forever. My home painted hood, shows absolutely no wear in 3 years. Mine took a few hours one night and dried overnight.

Hey Steve, where did you get that Honda flat paint at? Is that something you have to pick up at a Honda dealership, or can you get it at an auto parts store?

I'd be willing to bet there's a HUGE difference in quality- the question is if that difference is significant. I've never seen an oem LR one fade, crack and peel. I have seen a LOAD of aftermarket vinyl that does.

The 2 '97 XD's here in Portsmouth have the factory unit and it is toasted.

I would think that after a number of years the bonnet paint would fade where you don't have a decal, and you'd have to get it repainted if you ever removed it. So I don't really understand the reasoning behind choosing a decal over paint.

If using this $75 kit, wouldn't the wax trap on the edges and leave a thin white line all around? Do you guys think a buffer would ruin this thing too?

Tom- decals are usually easier than paint, that's why they are popular. I'm pretty sure I'm just going to paint it on my two Discos.

Stu- The Honda trim paint was left over from a repair job the body shop did- I saw the can and it was labeled as Honda brand. I'm sure any major brand of flat trim paint would be about the same. I'd stick with major brands for durability.

Well, I suck at putting on decals, witness the "jeep thing" decal. :p

hood blackout

the vinyl is comparable to the Factory material used.
Wax build up is not that bad, you can easily clean it up.
The blackout is covered by a lifetime warranty, and removal is not that bad depending on how long its been on there

my decal is factory and after 4 years it looks like hell. I was thinking of repainting the decal with flat black.

I just finished painting mine with flat black.

It looks great. :D I only wish I had done it sooner.

Auto masking tape, flat black paint, Scotch Brite pad, and about three hours of your time.

Total Cost $12.76.

I post some pics later.

Tom-
I'm going to be firing up the decal production again since things get slow this time of year- I'll hook you with replacements since yes, you suck at decal installation.
I've heard that bedliner material doesn't fade, you would just want the stuff that goes on thin. Of course, you could do what we did in high school an cover the whole truck with astroturf using adhesive spray and put a golf tee on the hood and roof. Portable driving range.
I'm surprised to hear the stock decal deteriorates so badly... Ive seen a few old Discos with it and never noticed them looking bad. The one thing I don't like bout my painted hood is that the windshield washer fluid makes it look like hell and I have to scrub it with some pretty harsh cleaner to get the whitish stains from the fluid off.
