Hood Scoop?

Hell if someone wants to put a hood scoop on their rig, its their rig; why not? I personally think they look rather tight...I'd put one on myself except I can't bring myself to cut a hole in my hood :( They do look cool though...maybe I'll just go down to advance and get a set of those fake ones that you stick to the hood

Seriously, I'm sitting here holding my sides...there's nothing saying he can't put a scoop on; if he wants one, I say HAVE AT IT!! I think it would look sweet as hell, even if there was no serious cooling effect to be had.

Me, I'm thinking about dropping a Chevy 454 into my disco, supercharging it, and having one of those BAAADDDASSSSSS chrome blowers sticking up 2.5 feet off my hood!!!!!

Mabey because, they hadn't thought of one. You can't solidly say that they thought about one in the first place

Maybe not, but I can solidly say you're a moron. It's not fucking rocket science...Motors develop heat, certain motors develop A LOT of heat, like a Ferrari. That's the reason for intakes, vents, louvers etc you see on lots of exotic cars with exotic motors.
The Land Rover motors are not exotic and do not develop a substantial amount of heat to REQUIRE any venting or hood scoops. Plus, they're aluminum, block AND heads, so they dissipate heat very well.
So saying hood scoops are not there because the designers "didn't think of it" is fucking retarded. They are not there because they are not needed.

Mr Ed - Sure, you can put one there and look like a fucking tool if you want. Nobody ever said you couldn't - we're debating the NEED, not the look. While you're at it, throw on some neon and some Flowmasters and make it look/sound really swwwweeeet.

LMFAO :p

Okay, okay, okay, got your point. Maybe while I'm at it I can "take if off some sweet jumps".

Yeah, maybe it will not be a huge performance factor as far as eliminating heat, but I'll see. When and if I do decide to put one on, I'll send some pics. Who knows, the work might not even be worth it, but then again it might.

Well thanks guys for your thoughts and ideas, I'll have them all in my head when and if I decide to throw one on there.

I've driven many vehicles in deserts agro,

And if pushed hard enough at low speeds, even a Land Rover can use extra cooling. certain situations can call for it. There is a lot more under a hood than motor, and lowering underhood temperatures can go a long way to preserving it. I'm not saying everyone here needs a hood scoop, I'm saying that in some situations it can be a benefit.

I have known plenty of people who have installed vents and additional fan power, as well as altered their coolant ratio for added cooling in LRs. It depends how you use the vehicle.

Cheers,

Kennith

Oh,

And by the way, in that other thread you posted in, did you notice that before the little issue of burying the tail pipe, his motor was overheating while off roading with the AC on? It happens, man.

Cheers,

Pretty high octane debate over basically a hole in the hood...I think rmarti made it pretty clear in his original post that: 1. It might help a little with performance (it certainly won't hurt) and 2. he wasn't sure about the looks (thus, looks aren't too far off track)

I'm thinking out the box here, so don't stone me too hard if this sounds stupid. has anybody thought about a hood scoop for their LR's? I know for performance it might help a bit, but I'm not sure about the looks. Can someone photoshop one on a Disco?

Oh yeah, I have a flowmaster on my Disco...doesn't sound too bad. :p

So at the mall in your Mom's P38 you don't need a hood scoop got it But in the desert by yourself you need a snorkel.

Not sure who you're talking to, or what the "Mom" comment means...but since you brought it up...a snorkle is not JUST for water crossings....it also helps with getting cleaner air into the airbox as it is rear facing and does not get direct particles into it. LIKE SAND, dumbass.

Sorry Agro, but that was too funny.

Look, I love Agro's response's because he gives another veiw into a discussion, a view that people are sometimes too scared to say or haven't even thought of.

Hood scoops!?!?! What is needed is a snorkle to keep the engine clean on the inside, then...

Two or more rows of louvres (sp?) for that really cool look.

Mileage may vary.

Is he driving backwards?

Does everyone with a snorkle drive backwards when doing water crossings ???
Don't you think that snorkles COULD have been designed to have the inlet forward facing ?? There's more than one reason to have the inlet backwards. I'd try to explain it to you, but it'd be a waste of time as your logic is flawed, as is your mental capacity to make a valid argument.

I'll go slower for you genius The picture YOU showed had the inlet facing forward YOU said that they have the inlet facing rearward when in the desert to keep the sand out.

I have a snorkle that i got for free and may never put it on, but anyway, it's top piece spins 180 deg. for sandy conditions. :D

"certain situation" would require a stock Land Rover to be fitted with a hood scoop ?

and the Rovers in the pics are more than likely diesels so the heat part doesn't really apply assuming the OEM cooling system is up to snuff.

put a V8 in those situations and some extra cooling is desireable.

Jaime,

The Mozambique series has an interesting choice of powertrain, note the owners comments regarding the abundant power, LOL

"Chris Mynhardt has a 3.0 Essex V6 in this short wheel base, he writes "What a transformation this Land Rover
underwent. I could then pull a LR offroad trailer through the thick sand in Mozambique and maintain a cruising speed of around 100 kph with an fuel consumption of 6.5 km to the litre. The engine characteristics seems to suit the SWB very well and not enough power or torque is available to break anything on the series SWB with sensible driving."

Yes, I did, as it should. But your original comment:

roverover said:

implied that a snorkle in the desert is usless. So the moron in the picture had his snorkle pointed the wrong way, and another moron, you, noticed it. Big deal, I didn't post the pic of the car to display it's snorkle, I posted the pic to show that under the most extreme heat conditions, hood scoops are not necessary.
You just chose to to focus on the snorkle becasue you're trying (poorly) to win an argument, but all you're really doing is showing us that your parents had no children that lived. Give it a rest fucko.
