How difficult a trail repair is a CV?

Looking to go with 35's once I get some 4.11s installed on my D2. Just curious as to whats involved time and tool wise in swapping CVs on the trail? I'm running 255/85's so I may need to peform this task sooner than later anyways.

my understanding was that the hub is the problem with 35s, moreso than the CV. Saw one at MAR that plum fell off, mate.

if you are talking about the one at Mar then that was sick. Drew had to put that thing back together with some dental floss and a couple of toothpicks with his swiss army knife just to get it to limp off the trail..

Best thing with a D2 is to have a spare half shaft with the cv and hub all in one.
That way you just need to pull the wheel, brake caliper and the four hub bolts. Pull out the whole assembly and install your spare.
The hard part is if your hub has never been off before. Loosen the bolts and use a mallet to beat on the bolts. Don't hit the hub or the flange, it will ruin the hub.

Yeah, if you have the whole assembly then you're golden. I just keep my cv's (D1) attached to my half shafts so i can get it done quick. And by quick, I mean 22 minutes. And you can time me if you want. Get me and Marc on one and it'll be less than that if he can get the hub nut on. :smilelol:

better carry 2 if plan on running 35's, and that's going to be pricy. New they are going for $475.00 plus, and used about $275.00, not including axles or hubs. R U running a locker or lsd? If not, good chance that you'll grenade the open diff also...This is no bullshit, I've gone thru 3 cv's with 285/75's...The drivetrain on the D2's just can't handle that big of a tire...

FWIW: I've run 285's for awhile now with frequent difficult wheeling and never had a problem. I'm going up to 34/1250s and will have to see if my luck holds. But I'm surprised there are folks out there blowing CVs and experiencing other major breakage running 285's,,,it's not that big a tire (approx 32.7 - 32.9).

Atlantic British has the axles for 399.95 which isnt bad. But I sure wish Kragen would carry them with a life time warranty. Those LLT warrantys are great.

SCSL, if my memory serves me, you aren't running lockers or limited slips, right? Locking diffs will greatly increase the forces on the axles and CVs. Obviously, terrain makes a huge difference as well. Greg Davis blew up his driveline really quickly in Moab with some big tires. Here in WA, we could probably get away with much bigger tires and not break stuff since everything is slimy and loose.

I haven't broken any out here (West)...I broke mine back East in the muck and the mud..and that's good price from AB, is that for just the cv, or does it come with the axle shaft?
