How hard is it to swap out a Transfer case on a 98 D1?
I have been offered a 98 D1 with a busted t-case for a couple of grand, the guy has another t-case by does not have the time, will or skill to swap it and just got himself a jeep instead of fixing the rover.
I have swapped t-cases on jeeps before but never on a D1 so was kicking around the idea of getting it and fixing it up as a trail rig. Is this a especially difficult job or pretty much a straight bolt in deal once you can get the rover high enough?

Is there anything else i should look for that may have got messed up with the t-case took a dump?

Thanks
Dave

you have been offered to do it for him for a couple of grand (worth it)
or you have been offered the truck for a couple of grand (not worth it)?

i have been offered the truck and a rebuild t-case for a couple of grand.

From what your suggesting is a very hard job then???

I just drove by the rover and its up on 32" with what looks like a 3 inch lift kit (teraferma is the brand of the shocks if that means anything) everything else looks stock and its got 150k on it.

He's saying a couple grand may be a little steep a price - but it's an easy easy job. Just a heavy t-case so be wary. :)

If the truck is VERY solid otherwise and in great condition it may well be worth a couple grand but if it's old/worn/beat then it's not worth that much.

Speaking of collateral damage - it isn't easy to destroy a LT230, even when there's no oil inside. If the truck has been driven on pavement for a long time with center diff locked, I'd consider diffs and axleshafts replacement imminent.

Is it the truck off of Washington? If it is it's been like that for a bit. I always wondered what was wrong with it. The disco does look decent, for a 98. Being in that neighborhood you could probably talk him down under 2k. Good luck.

Swapping transfer cases is a bitch. Every bolt will break, it's heavy hell, awkward. Takes way longer than you'd think it would. If you get a good deal, still worth it of course. Get him down in price to $1200-$1500 and go for it!

IMHO its not a tough swap at all. I have never broken a bolt while swapping one and the only common issue that makes you say F%$K is when the high low shifter rod pin is rusted and wont pop out.

easy swap. 2-4 hour job depending on experience and whether or not you have a lift available. An extra set of hands is definitely nice during installation. Make sure to clean and dope up the cross shaft on the front of the Tcase before installation.

If this truck doesn't have tons of miles and very little or no rust, it is worth it. Changing the t-case is easy, and don't let people that don't know any better tell you otherwise.

Nothing special, sockets, wrenches, penetrating oil, and at least a small floor jack on some good cinder blocks to hold the case up while taking all the bolts out, maybe a couple of friends to help man handle it out. A 6 pack and a couple of hours to kill. And watch for the shift rod pin to be sticky.

Heck I have a good t-case if you need to buy one.

Wow, I must be living right:D , I bought my '95 for $600 with a bad t-case. My buddy and I did the swap in his driveway in about 5 hrs. Around here, Colorado, T-cases are about $150-$300 at pick-n-pull and an average condition Disco I with a bad case is way less than a grand.
