How to remove & reseat rear A B S sensor - 96 D1 ?

OK, so I got the annoying ABS light a while back. After a little research here I used the paperclip in the OBD connector method and got a 2-13 code, which indicates a Left Rear ABS sensor gap problem.
Crawled under the truck this afternoon and followed the lone wire to what appears to be the ABS sensor in the back of the hub, but can't easily get a screwdriver or anything else in there to pry it out as per a thread I read relating to this. The shock is blocking easy access.
Can anyone who is familiar with the procedure let me know if anything needs to be removed in order to pull the sensor ? If I understand the little I've been able to read on this, the ABS sensor comes out from the backside of the wheel and doesn't require removing the wheel itself (?)
Assuming I manage to get the sensor out, is it just a question of tapping it back in lightly with a mallet ? How do you know when it has bottomed out and is seated correctly ?
On a related note, I can't seem to clear my ABS code by disconnecting the paperclip shorting pins 5 & 15 of the OBD connector. According to the instructions, disconnecting the short between the 2 pins while the key is in position 2 (furthest detent before engaging the starter) should have cleared the code the next time the key is turned to position 2. I keep getting the same 2-13 code when I short the pins to see if there are additional codes stored in the buffer... is this because I haven't reseated the sensor ?
Thanks muchly for any help :D

once you get the sensor out clean it off. You will understand how to put it back in once you get it out. The system runs a check on start, So clear your computer and hope for the best.

ptschram:

Surf your way to page 2 of the TSBs. The procedure was posted by Chris St. Louis back in 2005. The procedure is for '96 - '99 Series 1, but I believe it also applies to later models. There is a thread containing some additional info related to other models. Can't remember, but other models might use different pins on the OBD II connector (?)...

Here's the D1 procedure:

http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13968

If you want the actual blink codes I couldn't find them here on DiscoWeb but you can find them here (in .pdf format) on the Rovers North site.

http://www.roversnorth.com/web/downloads/instructions/RR_ABSfault.pdf

If you know the management here, maybe we can get the blink code list added somewhere on DiscoWeb.

Cheers !

Thanks James :D Looks like a fairly straightforward job which I'll tackle tonight. Hopefully the #%$ing codes will clear after I do it.

Hmmm, I don't even want to know how many hours the stealership would ding a customer for this...:ack:

Cheers !

Kev,

Looks like you did your homework for the rest of us. Thanks.:D

Now I might be able to plug that bulb/fuse back in.

Actually the thanks should really go to (hmmmm, ? can't remember the name) who had posted a reference to the blink codes on the Rovers North site some time ago. The TSB for the ABS I found with a search and a little snooping around articles in the forum.
Man I love this place, it's like having the Land Rover Discovery Library of Congress in my computer ;)

PS: I ain't Mil Spec but NATO Standard (Double cream, double sugar :p )

Thanx
I have a Rovacom and can get them the correct way and get the discussion of the meanings as well.

The Rovacom has a list of blink codes as well. I'll see if I can't get them and put them up somewhere.

Cool, I just looked up Rovacom on Google. Had read about them in the threads but never seen one. I just bought a Bluetooth ELM327 CAN-OBD II scanner. It's basically a small interface that plugs into the OBD II port on the truck and then links up to my computer. I can then use software (DigiMoto) to do all sorts of stuff, but unfortunately I can only do engine stuff and not chassis stuff (e.g.: airbags, ABS, etc.)
Yeah, it would be nice to see the blink codes up somewhere in here. Also it would be nice if the TSBs and "knowledgebase" were a little better organized. Still, DiscoWeb is a real asset :)

cut the plugs pull the bulbs and be over! comeon dweb your getting soft!

I'm tempted to do just that if it turns out I have to replace the %&#$ing sensor :banghead:
I'm also thinking about putting in a switch to allow me to turn the ABS on and off at will. It's not terribly handy and perhaps a little dangerous when you're not on nice clean pavement.
