As Howard Stern's contract will expire in 15 months, he announced he will leave his syndicated morning radio show to join Sirius satellite radio. I understand he has a contract with Sirius that will pay him $100,000,000 a year for 5 years. According to my math, Sirius will need quite a few new subscribers in order to just break even. Does the "King of all media" know what he is doing? He revolutionized talk radio, but can he do the same with satellite radio?

I hope you mean 500,000 per year and not 500 million

I agree that his fans probably won't all follow him to sirius

Actually, I think you've got the numbers a bit too high, it's $100mil per year for 5 years... but than again, who's counting, right ;) My wife said "we" are getting XM the day he switches to it... I could care less, but I'm sure with XMs natural popularity more folks will be switching to in anyway, not necessarily due to Stern.

500 mil for the whole contract, not per year.

I have XM and love it, but I won't change to Sirius just for Stern. Sirius sucks compared to XM and it's likely just a move to keep Sirius from being gobbled up or dying off.
They'll probably charge extra for his show and probably fill it with ads to come up with the $. If he went to XM, there's no doubt it would take off... Sirius doesn't have as good of a lineup of channels and the equipment available for it sucks compared to XM.

I used to a Stern fan when I lived in Pa. Since moving Utah I thought I'd miss it, but didn't. Now I go to Pa for visits and listen to him and think "still?" His stick is getting old, hard for someone making 100mil in 5 years to bemoan how repressed he is and how no one wants himor his brand of humor. The sex jokes and antics, while amusing are really getting old.

Just a matter of opinion. I assume you have owned both XM and Sirrius to make that statement?

In my opinion...Sirius has better programming than XM. You can get NFL radio and now Stern (well in '06) Wether you like him or not, Stern is a force in radio that can't be stopped. His core will follow him to sat radio will increase thier subscription by millions. Sorry to hear about your stock Ian...this announcement is not going to help you pay for those Dreadnaughts!

Sirius is taking a gamble. XM has 2,500,000 customers. Neither XM or SIRIUS is turning a profit at the moment. XM is financially backed up by Hughes and GM. Sirius is hoping that Stern will add 4 million in new customs and needs 1 million to break even on the deal. Right now they only have 600,000 customers.

As far as which is better, I think for many people Sirius has better programing especially in the talk radio area. They both have a similar number of channels overall. Saying SIRIUS is completely inferior to XM is just stupid.

Yes- I have Sirius as part of my Dish Network service in my house and XM for the car(s). If you like sports, Sirius is the way to go but I think listening to sports on the radio is a waste of time.
I've toured the XM studios in DC and their setup is amazing. State of the art recording and live studios... amazing stuff.

Actually, he has a $500mm 5 year deal, but he gets $80,000,000 / year for salaries for his staff and himself.

Not that $80mm per year is all that bad, but he does have to pay his staff and expenses out of that I'm sure.

I have XM and like the fact that it's $3 per month cheaper. :) I pretty much only listen to about 5 or 6 channels.

Country Music on Channel 16
Fox News
Weather Channel
Tampa Traffic
Miami Traffic
Orlando Traffic

I didn't say they WILL charge extra or run commercials, I'm merely speculating that they will. I'd put money on it that they'll pop that little detail in at the last minute.

XM also has color weather radar available, but it ain't cheap. I'm working on getting a demo system in my truck.

I may tivo his show off my dish network/sirius and dump it to minidisk for the car... maybe. it's kinda like the same show over and over though- maybe he'll freshen it up a bit.
