Huge POP from the front end.

Side of the road....
So, I finally was able to take my Disco out for its first run after the new lift. Everything started out fine and than all off a sudden I get a huge metallic POP, like the exact sound an axle shaft makes when it snaps; however, nothing happened, not one single broken part. The truck continued to make this noise, A LOT, all day long. I stopped on the trail and checked to make sure everything was tight. Now, the truck will pop the most when I am flexing the axles, but it will also do it at random times. So, I had a friend stand in front of the truck while I flexed it out and the only thing he could see happening was the springs would lift of the bottom perches slightly. Oh, it will only pop when the front sway bar is disconnected.

As for parts used on the lift, I used RTE 3? springs, adjustable panhard bar, and radius arms and I used Bilstein shocks. If anyone has any ideas as too what this could be, please fill me in.

Thanks,

Mike

Mystery solved.

Really? You think it would be the spring even when it's making the noise just bouncing over rocks? Just seems like an awful lot of noise for a spring moving around. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

where i'm at right now, duh...
make sure the panhard rod is good and tight. I had a popping noise in my RRC a few years back and it was because the panhard rod was a bit loose. it's probably the spring though... they're under a lot of pressure and can make loud noises when they move

I'll have to go after the panhard bar with an impact gun. I was just amazed at how loud and how often it was popping.

Thanks,
Mike

And its funny his name is "DiscoTech".

I bet it is the spring though, either get some cones or a LOT of hose clamps.

The "Discotech" name was a play on words. You know, like discoteka, old 70's dance clubs. And you can't get cones for the bottom of the front springs.

That's just what you want, uncontrolled springs in the front.

BUT, you can get all manner of retainers for them.

I am a big fan of retained springs.

We haven't had a good fight over retainers versus cones in a long time:smilelol:

i'm going to retain mine here real soon just so i can see how it affects things. I'm hoping it will make the front do more work....

DiscoTech, go to EE and they have a good set, top/bottom.
Rather pricey, but there are other approaches avail.
I have both front/rear retained for years.
I think the EE sets are rock solid.
Keep in mind I am not set-up for super-flex anyway.

The spring is only moving less than 1/4", so I am having a hard time believing a spring moving that little is making all that noise. In the event I find out it is the springs will the EE spring retainers fit a D2?

sounds like bushings of some sort.

look at shock bushings, panhard, radius arms, trailing arms, ect.

That's what I was thinking. I am going to hit everything up with an impact gun tomorrow and than ramp it and see if it makes a difference.
