I'll be sure to take a picture in my coon skin hat for you mike.

Anyone know anything about solar power? We were going to put some 55 gallon drums up and collect rain water and then let it gravity feed. However, we were concerned about it freezing in the winter months. I think I could do a simple solar panel to run a pump and 1-2 light bulbs pretty simple, and that way just put the water in the ground where it won't freeze.

Might also get a LPG range out of an RV instead of using my camp stove up there all the time and wasting those little mini bottles.

Here are some more pictures. Chinking is all done, just second coat staining, sealer, putting up trim work, roof insulation, and doors.

Here the insulation is going in the logs.

Here is the first coat of stain, will see another coat, and a sealer.

Still need to do trimwork

Still have to put the insulation in the ceiling and the guy is working on doing some beaded tongue and groove, depending on price its what we are going to do on the ceiling, or just do some rough cut cedar/poplar/oak.

The construction is done. Staining and chinking done, doors and windows in. We are in the midst of deciding on flooring and ceiling. I am going to pick up a nice wood stove I found on craigslist this weekend with 14' of stainless pipe, 6 of which is double wall! Just going to stain the cabinets I bough for cheap and will be good to go. Its going to be simple. we have a set of bunk beds, and another twin bed. A round table and chairs, coffee table, a few odds and ends, and still need to get a couch (preferably a pull out) and two recliners. That will get it started, and I'm sure stuff will find its way up there over the years. For the first year we will probably just haul in our own water and use a grunt bucket if needed until we can figure out our sustainable water set up. Its only a half hour from home, and walking distance to some family and friends so its not a big deal.

Probably won't do too much work until it cools off!

does anyone around here use a rain catch system for their water source? Looking at doing a gravity feed system or possibly using a pump and running off a car battery. Won't need to use it too often, just to wash hands and pots/pans.

The problem with rain water collection is most people try to use a gutter system to use the large roof surface area for harvesting. Doing this requires the top of your tank to be below the roof line, limiting your water pressure.

For rain water, the tank will need to be high to get enough gravity push for decent pressure. We have high mounted tanks in Uganda that we pump water into for holding and storing, and it's gravity fed from those. Our newest clinic in Uganda has a well on property. A solar pump sends that water up to a holding tank which gravity feeds the house. So I'd say no matter how "primitive" you're going at your cabin, you'll want a small pump.

For solar, you'll be fine if you can do math. You'll be figuring up expected kwh and usage for everything, then researching panels and controllers for those amounts. There are scores of great websites out there with more info.

Edit: a gutter system is good for routing water into 55 gallon holding tanks on ground level, then filtered/pumped back up to the holding tank above the roof line, or tapped into for ground-level water needs like irrigation, drinking water, etc.

Well got a 2400 watt yamaha "inverter" generator. We will probably end up burying the water supply and using a pump to get it in the house...not this year though, probably next spring/summer. Working on getting the stove installed. We got flooring down along with dry wall, some furniture is in, its ready to go with a few space heaters but would be nice to get the stove installed.
