Hypothetically how far could I have gotten?

Monday morning I decided to go on a day trip up the forest road to Lake Pillsbury so I left around 4 am and about 100 miles from home I thought I noticed my headlights flicker for an instant. Some time later it happened again and I was then certain I hadn't just imagined it. Still later the headlights went dim for a second or two then came back on. This happened a couple more times until finally they just went dim and the battery icon lit up. Luckily I had just reached a town and was able to exit the highway, pull into a mall parking lot outside a Jamba Juice and wait for daylight while I located the nearest auto parts store with my smart phone.

When it got light and the O'Reilleys was open I drove across town to it. They didn't have an alternator in stock but said they could get one by noon. I pondered the idea of just buying a new battery and trying to make it home. I remembered making it from Ensenada Mexico to San Luis Obispo in my Fiat 124 back in the 70's with a dead alternator but it had a carburetor and virtually nothing electronic so I decided, probably wisely, to wait for the alternator.

But I still wonder, how far would I have made it with all electrical stuff off including the climate control?

Not a Rover, but I made it about four miles in a '98 Tahoe once the battery light came on. It died in the Pep Boys parking lot. Turned out to be a bad alternator but the battery was beyond taking a charge.

Wow, because I was about to head a pretty good ways into the sticks. Not much up at Lake Pillsbury in off season like this. So after 15 years and roughly 136,600 miles my alternator decides, just prior to my leaving the beaten track, to finally give up the ghost!

Could have been a really lousy day. :ack:

I drove 2 hours on a regular old Deka battery in my Jeep with a dead alt at NIGHT in college. Ran a safe distance behind a tractor trailer with just my parking lights on. Replace the alt and the battery lasted another 2 years.

I had a pretty new battery, only a year old but with all of the ECU's and stuff I wonder how far it would have gotten me? My plan was to buy a new battery so I actually would have had two of them.

If you had a strong battery and turned off all the available electronics maybe an hour or so. But I think these new trucks use a lot more electricity that the old ones did. I had a friend drive 15 hrs from Nova Scotia to NJ on a brand new optima battery in his '71 Series rover. But that was also running a diesel engine and using hand signals for turning.

I will volunteer to give a real world report on a D2s range sans alt if a vendor is willing to send me a new battery for the test. My current one is 3+ years old, works well but even with a full charge likely wouldn't last as far as OP's scenario using a new battery.

I made it about 30 miles with from the time my M&S lights started flashing until my D2 coasted into the AutoZone parking lot. That was with two engine starts.

I can't remember how far, but I drove a fair distance with bad alternator. When I'm out, I keep a spare, because it's a rather important part of the vehicle. Just between and around towns during nice weather, though, I don't bother.

I think it was about 20 minutes, and the vehicle never died. I shut off everything I could, naturally. I was just living with a single Exide "Purple Haze" for a while then. When I got back, it still turned over and started.

Too bad I can't drive the thing now. This is something I really should try. It would be nice to know how far I can make it if that happens and I don't have a spare on hand.

Cheers,

Kennith

This can be risky on a serp belt motor.
I have seen a bad alternator sieze up and shred the belt.

On my v-belt RRC, I can just remove the alt belt and go....until it dies or swap the battery.
