Yeah, I feel for you I bought my '96 Disco used from a Mistsubishi dealer outside Toronto. I got the "extended warranty" for CA$ 1K and about 3 weeks after I had the truck I got the engine light came on. I brought it into the stealer and they did a few things (replaced a spark plug wire and some other minor thing). Told me to come back if the light came on again...
It did, so I went back and they did a more thorough investigation. They came back to me and told me it was most likely a valve problem, but they would not be 100% sure until they popped the head off. They called the warranty people to ask about coverage and then contacted me told me that if it was the valves, then that was covered.
The only potential problem was that if it turned out to be something else that was not covered, then the labor to remove and reinstall the head would be at my expense.
I asked the tech if it was a good bet it was the valves and he said yes, so I authorized the work.
They pulled the head and sure enough it was the valves. Apparently there had been a recall for these valves which were poorly designed and tend to accumulate unusual amounts of carbon.
The next day I get a call back from the dealer and they tell me that the warranty people were now saying that they would not cover the repair at all.
At that point the stealer said it was out of their hands, so I got involved and talked to the warranty rep but got absolutely nowhere with him. I had read through the fine print of the warranty agreement and it looked like it could go either way. They claimed it was "wear and tear" but I claimed it was a mechanical failure. They would not budge.
Talked to my dad (lawyer) and he told me that it would end up costing me more in legal action than it was worth, so I bit the bullet and paid $2.5K for the work.
In the end, it seems LR should have at least pitched in for part of the repair cost since there had been a recall on the crappy valves. In my opinion, a recall is an admission of error. But they would not help out and I can't remember the excuse they used.
So the first lesson I learned was that I will NEVER buy extended coverage again. By and large, these warranty companies are crooks who do all in their power to deny claims, much like the health insurance industry in the US. Second lesson, LR is also not to be trusted when it comes to any warranty work. This has been confirmed by a second bad experience with a LR recall... The plastic gas tank was found to potentially leak at the seams, and replacement was recommended. Unfortunately, only the tank itself was covered, so I had to pay (about $400 or more) to replace the fuel pump which was not covered even though it was "fused" to the tank and could not be removed without damage.
Poor design in my opinion. A $400 fuel pump that cannot be removed because it becomes fused to the tank... :banghead:
Oh yeah, don't think the techs are off the hook either. I had a shimmy develop in the front last year, so I brought it in to the stealership and they told me the CV joints needed "adjusting". It was going to cost (I think) $700 per side for the work and parts. So I brought it into an independent Brit car shop and he told me it just needed tires, which I was about to do anyway. New tires eliminated the shimmy ! If I had gotten the work done, I would be out a load of cash and all for nothing, not to mention another $1200 for tires !
I think when you're dealing with LR it's best to be completely ignorant of mechanics, lest you realize how badly you're being screwed. I'm sorry but I no longer trust LR ! I admit the truck is built like a tank and will go where a lot of other vehicles wont venture, but I've experienced several problems related to piss poor design, from the valves, gas tank, ABS sensors, stereo amp corrosion, nylon window rollers, etc. that I am unimpressed with the overall quality of this truck and the attitude of the LR dealership people.
