I did a stupid thing the other day. I have an '04 DII with 97k miles and smelled coolant but could not find any leaks so I put in some metalic stop leak in coolant. Now it overheats when on the interstate especially with the A/C on. I flushed coolant system and put in new thermostat. Still the same overheating. The only thing I can think that it might be is that it clogged the radiator some how or the water pump. I just put in a new water pump earlier this year. I should have just left it alone.

I found this out while driving from PA to VA yesterday. I drove all the way with windows down and 95 degrees. The funny thing is the temp guage would go up and down gradually. It didn't matter if you were going up hill or not. The temp would go up for no reason then down.

Other than the flogging what do you think I should do?

If it's smelling and overheating, but you have coolant and a working water pump, then I would check the pressure cap. If the pressure cap is venting, you could be smelling the resulting vapor. Also check that the viscous fan coupling is working. If it does not lock up properly, the fan may not be turning fast enough on the highway.

x2 on clogged rad. Run the truck for a little while until you get to op temp. Shut off the truck. See if there are any cold spots on the rad, is it only hot near the upper hose? If yes.. Remove upper and lower hose, try putting a garden hose in the top and see what kind of resistance you are getting. If you need to cup your hand around the hose to make the water go through the rad, its clogged. Remove the rad, flip it upside down and try flushing it with the hose in the opening where the bottom hose attached... you will see all the shit coming out. If you are still getting a lot of resistance get a new rad, they are like 169 shipped on ebay.

Sounds like you have some air in the system.
