I just got my 04 Disco SE and I was checking the truck out to make sure everything worked and I noticed something wierd when I had the engine running and I opened the hood, I could hear a clunk noise evey 60 seconds. Is this normal?

What kind of clunk? Was it your a/c or defrost on, cycling the air compressor? Burning smell might just be the newness of the truck but if it continues or gets worse, take it back.

My 04 makes a lot more noises than that- be happy! Mine sounds like a 67 plymouth with a bad water pump and has more interior rattles than my 95 Disco. So far, I'm really unhappy.

The strange smell when it gets hot goes away- it's usually just the exhaust system and cleaners and crap they get on the engine.

I checked mine today after reading your post- My AC compressor was cycling since I had the defroster selected. It made almost no noise as the clutch engaged and disengaged.
I couldn't find any sounds similar to what you described, but I don't have ACE.

One thing I found was the horrid noise coming from my engine was the little pulley to the right of the AC compressor. I sprayed the hell out of the bearing area of the pulley with aerosol lithium grease and the noise went away completely.

It may well be... but at least the neighbors don't point and laugh anymore when I start the thing up. It sounded like all hell breaking loose- I bet that pulley bearing is toast, but I'd also bet I'm getting a new one very soon. :D

The honeymoon was over quickly on this truck- we drive around with the radio and heater off so we can try to locate all the rattles.

I hope mine doesn't come to that :) I also noticed today that if I start the truck with the brake pedal pressed in then I get a quick jerking / feedback from from the brake pedal. Is this normal? Should I always start truck without pressing in brake?

I could very well be wrong, but I was told to NEVER hold the pedal when starting a vehicle with ABS. Dont know why, don't know if it is BS... just remember being told over and over a long time ago.

Maybe the reason that I have no squeaks in mine is because they forgot to install the parts that typically squeak...

congrats on the 04. pedal jerk is normal at startup. i personally don;t have my foot on the brake pedal when starting just don't like the feeling of it so i just don't. no cluncks or squeaks on mine so far but one thing every morning starting... it starts and revs very high and engine sounds like something is broken inside just sounds like shit. then after about a minute, it all goes away and its just nice 4.6 idle. :D

i guess its a 4.6 thing.

Same morning engine noise on my 04', goes away after it warms up a little. Mobil 1 seem to make it a little quieter though. As for body noise and squeaks, so far it is ok with a few squeaks here and there. :D

My 04 SE7 has 1500 km on it now, all the noises are there. The brake pedal jump at start-up is the ABS self test routine. It is only a problem if it ISN'T there at start-up.

I get a noise, more a rumble, on light acceleration coming from the transmission/transfer case until it has warmed up. The best I can do to describe it is to say it sounds like a diesel engine at idle. Scary noise! Once I have driven a few kms the sound goes away completely.

I don't much like the fast idle as soon as it starts, always makes me wonder if the top end got any oil!

Most of the burning smells went away within the first 1000 kms.

The smell is the new catalytic converters. No noises in my ?03. It must be CDL related. :D :D

Some owners report squeaks and rattles coming from the fender flares...

I gotta rattle deep behind the dashboard- If the dealer can't find it, I'll look for it when I install the NAV system. Sometimes if you get some of that thin foam packing material and just wrap all the various harnesses, especially near the HVAC tubing, it'll solve those little rattles.
The HVAC fan rattles badly at low settings, so I'll have that looked at when it goes in soon for sched stuff.
