I didn't really think he was looking in that price range.

I'm surprised they haven't done a traditional, thin, Latin machete yet. I suppose they haven't considered it cost-efficient, when fifteen bucks or so will get you a good one.

They may be cheap, but in the right hands machetes are terribly effective. There's a reason they still exist, and it's not just because of the price.

I got it last week and knocked down some weeds.

I hit one rock already

It was a silly tool for what I needed, but honestly it makes trimming bushes more fun

Anyway, I am looking for one to clear a couple of sections of super tall grass in my yard.

A friend of mine spent a bit of time in Ecuador and he said that most of the people there used machetes to cut their lawns. He said it actually looked almost as good as using a mower, and that they were pretty fast at doing it.

They use those angled slashers I linked earlier. If you sharpen them appropriately and get the pace and swing right, it doesn't take much more time than it would to use a string trimmer.

That's one of the reasons machetes exist. Hit all the rocks you want. :D

It's also why you need to get a real one, like the Tramontina. Many of the others will chip dangerously, shatter, or simply break in half; sometimes only when cutting branches.

Get that edge smoothed out if you haven't already, unless you just got lucky when you bought it.

Here's a neat video of someone making a machete out of an old saw blade:

That's how machetes should come about. One could argue that some basic heat treating would be advisable, but there's no way to tell how it all held up. It looks nice and springy at the end, anyway.

All in all, the end result is very nice. He really nailed the spirit of the tool.
