Virginia beers suck beyond comprehension. Not to mention they have VERY few breweries to begin with. Hell Delaware has better beer and that's sad.

I could care less who is running the state (CA); it's the most diverse when it comes to landscapes and climate. Where else can you be in the desert and in the snowy mountains just hours apart. I dig it.

Afghanistan for one, and you also get all that UXO, fun fun fun...

Dan, I'll do a swap with you. I'll send you something from WA.

Forget the wine, you want the moonshine. That stuff is world-class.

Yeah, and Peru, New Mexico, certain parts of Africa and Asia... but it's a fairly uncommon thing, worldwide.

Arizona and Utah are good for that too. In Az you can be at a ski resort in the morning and a pool party in the evening.

Indeed - and in CA you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon. Much of western N. America is like this - deserts, mountains, etc.

Have you been to OR or WA?

Yes and yes, but I was making a remark about a state with unique geological characteristics. I've been to every state with the exception of Wisconsin and Minnesota.

CA has more than just desert and high elevation mountains of course. My point was that it has a rare diversity of landscapes that are hard to come by. By crossing the Golden Gate from San Fran to Marin Co. it's rather dramatic in itself and no I am not talking about the people.

My point is that those same "unique geological characteristics" are present in OR and WA. Just cross the cascades and it is a whole different world. We get over 30 inches of rain in the Seattle area and they get about 7 inches or less in some parts of eastern Washington. Today it will be about 80 here in Western WA and it will be 97 in Eastern WA.

The only states I haven't been to are a few of the deep south states and Alaska. You should head to WI and MN. They have some of the most unpretentious, genuine people that you will ever meet.

I've traveled the United States with work and for pleasure. Santa Barbara was the high point of Cali IMO. As I said earlier I could do without LA and I'm sure the rest of the California residents wouldn't mind loosing it one bit.

As far as beautiful states you're not going to beet Alaska and Hawaii. Hands down the last states to enter the Union offer the best landscape.

It's kinda nice to be able to swim in the ocean (and take a kayak out) without a wet suit.
And, unlike Oregon, driving 10 miles under the speed limit is rather uncommon in CA.
And you can pump your own gas.
That said, West Coast and Rockies ... rock.

Peter, I hear ya. It is about priorities. CA offers quite a bit, but I just prefer the balance of WA. It has a really nice cosmopolitan city atmosphere in Seattle and yet I can be fishing in a remote creek 40 minutes after leaving my house.

My two complaints with CA is that there are too many people which leads to horrible traffic and the gun laws are fucked.

I don't even know if our gun laws are fucked. Yeah, it would be difficult to get a full-on auto, but, short of that, it's walking into the store, filling out the form, and a few days later, getting your firearm. There may be some odd quirks in it, but in general they are the same as in many other states (VA excepted - but I wouldn't want to buy that POS Romanian AK47 anyway).

Lots. Actually, a whole lot. I don't know how you research this unless it's posted in each wineries web site. But if you visit some of the wineries over near Orange, you'll see a lot of local, state, and International award winners. Horton and Barbersville winery come to mind as having a few. Many of the Horton wines have been selected each year to be served at White House dinners and banquets. I think pound-for-pound Horton winery is one of the best wineries on the east coast. Of course there are better wines than Horton, but their selection is not nearly as vast.
