I'm missing my D1 so badly.. She was a Black 1995 D1 that I put so much work into. I'm thinking of purchasing another one. Any suggestions on year? Which were the better years on early D1 production?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

1997 Toyota Landcruiser..... oh wait, what? Oh you said a "Rover" not "Reliable". :D

I'd look for what ever the CLEANEST most solid one you can find is. GO SOUTH to get one - NOT Chicago where I see your listed as being. Pay the extra $$ to find a clean rust free one from the south or out west. Just be sure to pull the carpets and such to be sure it's not full of rot/fungus and the like! Those southern boys like to grow mushrooms in the carpets after wheeling in the swaps. :)

There were two different models produced this year correct? One had the higher rear lights? Which model/ vin should I be looking for?

Thanks

yeah both the D1 and DII were made in 1999...the DII has higher rear tail lights.

If you want rare colors, overall exterior appearance, and upscale interior, the 1998 Disco LSE is the way to go, but I'm biased. Obvious drawbacks are more electrickery to give you headaches. Depends what you want- a rare example to preserve or something to modify.

I dont care about the upscale interior. I would rather have the black rubber than imitation wood grain any day.. Oh, and yes the less electrickery the better.
Thanks guys

I'm going to put in a vote for '95 as well... much less electrickery than the others (engine management at least). mine will run with most sensors disconnected (albeit not very efficiently). Being pre-OBD-II means engine upgrades/swaps could be a bit easier to register if you live in an emissions-testing town.

To be honest, my only real reason for voting for the '95 is that mine is still running great after all these years, while friends' newer ones have all met the grim reaper, all due to high repair costs. On the other hand, maybe they were all secretly wanting to finally own a prius or a miata. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Why the 1997 landcruiser instead of other years?

newest. 93-94, 95-97 are the same, very minor differences.

My friend has a 97 40th anniversary edition that came with electric lockers front and rear from the factory.
FZJ80 is the model if you are looking it up, but they are very bloated and bulky to drive.
I like my 96 disco WAY better.
Of course, cost is a factor... he paid $9000 and I gave $1600 for mine with only 10k miles difference on the od.

What Doug (Roving Beetle) said.
Get the cleanest D1 you can find.
On the other hand, be wary of "gently-driven" trucks - I have one, and it will need valve job and possibly new camshaft within a year or two.
