I am looking to get an Impact Wrench to carry in my truck and use with my Powertank. I am interested in the Snap On MG31 3/8" drive one. I really like this one but I am not sure if it would be better if i got a 1/2" drive instead. I dont have any 1/2" drive sockets or anything now. If anyone has some suggestions as to what size to get or if there is a different brand or model i should consider that would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Nick

I just got the 2131 QT from IR, its alot nicer than the Craftsman one I returned, which is also supposedly made by IR. They didnt feel the same. I paid the same money with a craftsman club card discount as I would have for a Craftsman Pro gun-$150 or teh IR was gonna be a hundred more.

I liked it so much I got a 3/8" IR ratchet, the 107XPA http://www.holdp.ch/e/airratchet.htm

got that with free shipping on amazon

I'll never buy CH crap again.

What do y'all do for oiling these tools beyond what an inline air oiler provides?

I use a 3/8 Matco air gun all day everyday with no problems. Nothing on you're truck needs more than 500ft/lbs of torque to remove it. Dont remember the part # but it is a composite body impact gun, no lables left on it after 8 years of daily use. Best impact made in my mind, just my two cents.:twocents:

I have an MG31. If you're not prepared, it can break bolts in an instant! It's a pretty damned ballsy little impact, in fact, I often think it is too powerful.

PT, that is on my list of tools for the trail, the 1/2" impact is nice but a big lunky to take as part of the trail kit-tho thats currently what I do.

My home tool box has a 1/2" and a 3/8 ratchet. They come with me but I feel bad taking them out in the muck for trail repairs- ya know they get sand and shit all over them

Tell me, is the MG31 torqey enough to do lug nuts? axle bolts? I guess its a matter of finding 3/8" impact sockets that are 15/16 and 1 and 1/16

I'd love to carry just one impact for the trail, but for now it seems like i may pick up a used MG31 if its as ballsy as u say, or I may just go score some used 1/2 and 3/8 to leave in the truck, let its suffer heat, dust sand and potential theft. My new Ingersol impacts are too shiney to throw into the trail tool box

What happened to you? You used to be so disagreeable, now you're personable :)

I think the MG 31 is a great impact and for what, $350? It's a steal.

I'll see if I can remember to use it to tighten some lugs and then, I'll use my torque wrench with the dial gauge to estimate how tightly torqued they are. Remind me, you know how I am!

hmm.
I was able to find a cheap IR 2115Ti and so i got it, and ordered a rebuild kit for it too.
should be here in a few days

Its rated at 280 ft lbs and should be just as beefy as the MG31

I need to go get a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter and see how it does, I really ratther have a 3/8 gun as the only thing I take besides a hand ratchet and breaker bards in each size as part of my trail tool kit.

My 1/2 impact is new, set me back some coin and I dont want to keep a new tool in a cabin, heat/cold etc. My OBA surprisingly did fine with my 1/2impact on lugs, its just a big item to make room for- my pelican that I keep my tools in is full.

I'm real happy with my new 1/2 inch Snap-On MG725. Light weight and has not failed me yet. I do believe Snap-On probably has made some of the worst impact wrenche's so far, but this one seems great. Since I primarily use it for tearing down parts cars you have to hold it steady, it can make your wrist hurt.

Rated 600 lbs. ft forward
810 lbs. ft reverse

It breaks 1/2 inch to 3/8 adapters at will

LOL, my rebadged IR (Matco) does the same. If I'm not paying attention and turn a fastener the wrong direction, SNAP!

Mooky:
The MG-31 will easily achieve 100 ft/lbs on lug nuts.

this is what i ended up with:

and

http://www.amazon.com/INGERSOLL-IMPACT-WRENCH-MODEL-2131QT/dp/B0002SRM74

using a viair http://www.zaib4x4.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1245 in my rig with a 2.5 g tank and a 30g sears at home, does the trick, both bare minimums for the tools, and my oba has a co2 hookup, so i'm not relying on any one airsource, obviously co2 works best, but I have yet to buy a tank, thats next...
