APG is way off on his shipping cost estimate of $1000. Shipping cost as of last month was 986 pounds-regardless of carrier (Southampton to Baltimore- the leading ro/ro port on the Atlantic coast). Converted to dollars thats right @ $2000 for ro/ro. Wallenius and K lines both have ships leaving every couple of days (cost the same). Don't buy the shipping insurance- its not worth the additional $285 and it covers nothing ( had a 110 pickup damaged last week in shipping-crease down the entire left side of the truck). The insurance only covers you in the event the ship sinks.

In '04, it cost me about $1800 from Liverpool to Newark, Ro-Ro.

Customs was $250. Storage was $150 (don't expect change, nor a receipt from the storage guys, be glad to get out with your truck and wallet).

That seems more in line with what I've gotten quote-wise so far to Halifax. I suspect landing them initially in Canada will save a lot of hassles in the end.

Thanks for the information, now I just need to make sure the funding is secured ASAP.

The 200TDI is a sweet engine by the way. Personally I prefer it over a 300TDI for expedition purposes.

I hear this a lot.
Can you elaborate?
Is this because of lubrication failures in the three hundy?

In the end it'll depend on what I can find in what condition for what cost really, but newer is better in general. :)

Well, main difference with the Disco application: the 200TDI was 100% mechanical, while the 300TDI had some electronics at the fuel pump. But as far as I know this is not the case for the 300TDI Defenders. But for sure it had all the emissions control shit. Anyway, the 200TDI mounts nearer to the bulkhead, giving a bit better weight distribution. Also (but this is more my own feeling) the 300TDI seemed more prone to timing belt failures then the 200TDI. I also prefer the LT77 gearbox, but many would oppose this view. I also prefer the conventional accessory belt drive of the 200TDI.

Agreed on the 200tdi- great simple engine. Selling my 200tdi CSW tomorrow morning to a friend. Cant justify 2 diesel 110's.
I tried though......

not sure what you mean here.

my Rover shop owner in Sao Paulo, Brasil had a '93 with a 200 in his 110 and made sure I had a 300 in my 110 when I was in the process of buying one.

he subsequently sold his to get one of the last 110s with the 300 made in S.P.

you raised an interesting point and according to my old shop manual when the ECR was fitted to the engine, it did have a control module associated with it.

perhaps that is what he meant.

pretty sure my Brasilian 300 did not have this as I don't recall seeing any plugs by the throttle cable.

I'm trying to remember, did the 300 have the electronic EGR?
According to my Haynes manual later models in the UK, and some export areas, had the EGR.
As for the fuel stop solenoid, that'll be my first mod to my 300Tdi for my D90, to ditch it and go with a cable controlled fule shutoff.

300tdi puts out about 5 more HP than a 200tdi. for expedition purposes always use a 200tdi, simpler, easier to get parts and repair on teh roadside.
the egr didnt come on the defender for the 300tdi but i have never come across one from a disco which i couldnt blank off in about 3 mins working on it and get better mpg and power......

i am in the uk, if i can be of help sourcing anything then let me know. i have 5 defender 110's all 1983 to go to the usa and a number of 300tdi's, 200tdi's and nissam diesel engines to fit rovers including one with a ZF tranny attached.......

I wanted to thank everyone for their input, I ended up with a 1992 110 and just dropped it off at pier 22 and WW sails with it to Halifax tomorrow. Needs a bit more work than I had thought but it should be a very interesting experience to say the least :)
