I'm sure this has been covered before but..............when will it be possible to legally import a defender from the uk? What was the first model year for the defender?

1983. But, some had build dates in 1982. To bring them in, it has to be 25 years after the build date.

Good luck finding a 1983 Defender worth importing. Very few are in good condition. And the ones that are in good shape, still aren't that good. Very few exceptions.

wow! 2008 is right around the corner! I can begin the countdown...........i'm going to be looking for a defender pickup, it would really come in handy with working on the house and be a great offroader too! The best of both worlds..............can't wait! thanks for the info.

you can import model years that were imported here. BUT they need to be federalized. They must be like a nas defender exactly... IMHO federalization is spendy!!

Start the savings account, too.

Depending on the condition of the truck (from 'yeah, it's okay' to 'sweet Jesus what did the p.o. use to wash this thing, salt?!??'), you'll need a good bit of dough to get it ready for what you need.

I'm thinking about this too. On a truck bought from the UK sight unseen, I'd expect to spend at least $2-7000 to get it ready. Of course, YMMV.

Good luck!

You can get fair D90's for much less over there than you can here, but... the price will probably go up soon (say, 2008) And realistically speaking, you will be looking at a fair truck, but will probably need to do a rebuild to have anything like what an NAS D90 in good condition is.

Wasn't the D110 actually fist year as 1982, with some produced in '81??? I thought they came out a year earlier than the 90. IIRC.

No, the 110's official introduction was as an '83; but yes, the 90 was a year later, in '84.

I have also heard that some of the 110's were out in late '82, but would still be an '83 model.

Of course, the Stage Ones are all legal now, the 109 w/ the 3.5 V8. Still leaf-sprung, but, could be had for even less....

FWIW....
