Mud? No thanks. I was over the hubs in brackish water today scoping out coastal damage from the last two storms, I’m not sure what’s worse… that or the mud. At least I can just rinse that off… mud stays around forever.

when my son says “drive through the water daddy” I really don’t have a choice.

Yeah, well the nice thing about that is ( if you have a little backbone) it won't be very long and your kids can do those trivial jobs. Win for you, win for them ( although they may not agree at the time), win for society.

Funny story along those lines. My son recently visited home and admonished me for being a poor parent. His girlfriend is finishing nursing school in a small town with limited opportunities, so wanting to stay around her he took a job at Menards. And when someone comes in and ask him where some obscure plumbing supply item might be found... well it's all my fault that he doesn't know what they're talking about. I wasn't demanding enough of him as he was growing up. The sad thing is I waited so long in life to have children that I won't be alive to throw that back in his face at some point.
This took a turn.

in the warm weather he and my nephew love soaping the trucks up.

as far as everything else? IMO all our kids will need therapy one way or another regardless of how good of a job you think you’re doing. Just be receptive to what they say. My parents aren’t, and it definitely hinders the level of our relationships.

IDK, my childhood was pretty bad. I'm sure others had worse. My mom threatened to kill me a few times, acted on it once by pushing me down some stairs. Thank god she died when I was 12 or I may not be here. I never had therapy. Did I need it, IDK. It did leave me a very thick skinned person and someone who was not very sympathetic to the "hardships" my children went through. Did that scar them? The daughter is doing very well selling real estate in TX and the son is a very self assured "toxic male" with a big heart. I would tell people who questioned the way I raised my kids that 150 years ago children were riding in the back of a wagon hoping Indians didn't find them and rape and kill them. The ones who survived went on to give birth to the greatest county the world has ever seen. If you have Paramount+ watch 1883.

Now back to the topic at hand.

Test drove the Rivian RS1 suv this morning. Man, this is a completely different kind of truck, very impressive. Look at that flat load floor! I wanted to take a nap but they wouldn't let me.

A little bit higher toward the front but not as much as it appears in the photo, very nearly level, perfect for sleeping

I almost had myself convinced that I should suck it up, lay down the $1,000 deposit, and buy one. It would arrive later this year, maybe September or so. A standard dual motor (not the more powerful sport dual motor and not the crazy as hell quad motor) with the "large" battery pack (they don't offer the smaller standard battery pack yet but they do offer the max battery pack which is larger than large), plus the off road package (skid plate, spare tire, 275/65/20 all terrains - that's a 34" tire). $90K which will get you 300-310 miles per charge. Or you can add $10K for a total of $100K for max battery and get up to about 350-360 miles per charge. The offroad package sucks about 50 miles off the total range.

I'm heading out on a 2-day job tomorrow, driving 250 miles to the job site which is in the middle of nowhere - Topock, AZ. So I could make it there with 300 miles in the bank but then what? The nearest Rivian charging station is in Kingman, AZ which is 57 miles away, 57 miles beyond my destination. Would I make it? And why would I want to add 114 out-of-the-way miles to my job? I can't bill the client for that 2 hour drive plus the charge time. There's also a charging station in Quartzite but my route doesn't take me through Quartzite. I guess I could change my route to go through Quartzite but that would add about 30 minutes each way. Then I'm still 110 miles from my job. So I guess I'd have to head from my house to Quartzite, charge back up, head to the job, straight back home through Quartzite again with a charge stop there. Not inconceivable but also not very convenient.

I asked the Rivian sales guy (really cool guy) what he'd suggest for a 5-day camping trip through Utah and he suggested bringing a generator. Seriously.

Another thing....the AT tires are Pirelli Scorpions specially selected for the Rivian (not sure if they are specially made for Rivian).

I wonder what a set of heavy ass MT's would do to the range.....plus a roof rack, plus some lights, plus 300 lbs of gear in the back.

Would an E rated tire even be enough for these tanks? Don’t for get what running the heat or A/C does to range… like the Rivians but seem impractical (for now) for anything besides city driving or moderate range commutes

Overland Journal did an R1S remote/dirt/off-road test drive. I couldn’t find it online but since you’ve done the math, it might be an interesting read (get feel if what they published holds up).

A journalist I follow put Toyo AT3s on his and IIRC that knocked off 20 or so miles of range.

so, you'd have a gas powered electric truck?

i guess, hypothetically, if you had the pickup truck version, you could drive around with the generator running in the back charging your batteries.

That's exactly the upcoming Ram hybrid is going to be.
3.6V6 charging the battery, everything else purely electric.
Think this is the future. Audi’s Dakar ‘EV’ has a small engine generating electricity. They’ve been doing this on trains for decades

So I take it the efficiency math works out that it's better to power a battery charger with gas than the actual car?
